Howdy-
Father-in-law has a K7s5A that is acting flaky lately. I want to replace the motherboard with something else that is NEW but retain all his other hardware and NOT reinstall Windows XP etc.

Any recommendations for a replacement board that will be 'plug-in-play' in this situation?

Rest of components:
AMD XP 2400+
1GB PC2100 (2x512)
Geforce4 MX

Thanks,
CxP

All of the NT-based Windows OS' since NT4, maybe older, have a "Repair" install procedure that covers your situation. You just want to run that before doing anything else with the XP setup on the hard drive (it runs from the CD, NOT from the Hdd), after making the swap.

Otherwise, you would be stuck with using the exact same chip set in whatever MB you chose as a replacement. I would recommend turning loose of the XP cpu, though, and upgrading to an A64, but if you are determined on staying with 2003 hardware (almost nothing new for XP after that), get an Asus A7N8X-X. It's an excellent MB, stable, cool-running, quiet, etc.
