Here is how it works: You have probably heard of Columbia House, they have a cd, a video, and now a DVD club. Go to columbiahouse.com and click on the join the DVD club link. Once there you can pick 5 DVDs for .49 plus shipping. Then click on the start your membership off right button and pick a DVD for 14.00. Now you only have to buy three DVDs at the regular price of 20.00 to fulfill the membership requirement. Now look at how much it cost you: 30.00 for the first 6 DVDs!

When you get the start your membership off right dvd you only have to buy three more at their regular price of 19.99 and you have fulfilled the membership requirement. The cost will be 9 DVDs for only $90.00!

Now that you have fulfilled you membership the savings will really begin.

When you buy a DVD from Columbia house they have a program called fun cash. For every DVD you buy after the membership requirement is met they give you two dollars fun cash to spend on their DVDs so really you are getting two dollars back. Now most of the year their prices are not the best you can find online, but a few times a year they have sales that offer a tremendous savings to you. It is during these sales that you can get DVDs from 11.00-7.00 or lower these are current hits too not some movies that no one has heard about. They have the best sales in the middle of the year and around the end of the year. The best sales are 50%off all DVDs if you buy one at regular price. Most of the time when they have their 50% off sales they also have free shipping if you buy 3 or more. Now they still charge you shipping at some times of the year but there is a 15.00 maximum shipping charge. Be sure to sign up for all their email notifications so you can get the best deals, they have a deal of the day email, that has DVDs 50% without having to buy another DVD. Also be sure to check the Columbia house website often, sometimes they have one day sales that are not in the emails.

A few more tips: Do not buy the directors selection through the mail, unless you have not fulfilled your membership requirement. If you buy the DVD they have for the directors selection alone and they are having a 50% off sale you can't make it your regular priced dvd so you will not be able to get DVDs for half off. If you go online you can put it in your cart then add more DVDs so the director?s selection will count as your DVD at regular price. The prices they have on DVD sets are not the best, So what I do is try to save up fun cash so I can get the sets I want free. It is also a very good idea to keep the DVDs you want to order when a sale comes, in your wish list. At random times in the year they will have a 10% off wish list sale for everything in your wish list. Usually this is when they have the 50% sale as well so some times you can get DVDs for 60% off! I can answer any questions you guys have about it.....hope it helps somebody.

yeah, at dvdtalk there's coupon codes that will get you better deals. I've done it one and got 9 dvds (I think) for around $75 shipped.

Not bad.

Yeah, I just got an offer in the mail this afternoon from CH that'll lower the price per DVD.

Get 5 DVDs for $0.49 + free shipping and buy THREE more at regular club price (plus shipping).

-OR-

Get 5 DVDs for $0.49 (free shipping), add another for $14.99 (free shipping) and only buy TWO more at regular club price (plus shipping), plus the option to buy one more during the initial order for $9.99 (free shipping).

So that's like $65.50 (plus shipping for the two at regular club price) for 9 DVDs. After shipping charges, that's about the price that GtPrOjEcTX states.

I've read the FAQ at DVDtalk. There are codes to minimize the price per DVD and instructions on how to get through the phone system in minimum time when you call to cancel (and then join up again to get the best deals). It's worth reading.

Don't forget that the shipping and "handling" charge is pretty steep and they charge sales tax too so a $10 DVD suddenly becomes almost $15!

I think I'd rather buy from deepdiscountdvd where there is no tax and no shipping or handling.

thought it would be worth noting.... many public libraries now have DVDs you can checkout for free! Decent selection at my branch in L.A.

On their website, the anime section is pretty slim. Is this all they offer, or is there a larger selection available to members?

Here Here! My wife and I get DVD's from the library all the time. It's not like Netflix or anything, but you just setup a list "queue" and be a little flexible when they're available/come in!

Saves us lots of money! :)

Well I never get them unless I can get free shipping and they don't charge tax, at least not for me

Your average DVD cost with columbiahouse comes out to about $8/dvd (depending on the enrollment code you use) - that includes taking into account shipping costs and taxes. Yes, you are "over paying" for your commitment dvds, but thats because you are getting your enrollment dvds for next to nothing. So you need to look at the big picture. If there are several dvds you want that CH carries, you can't get a better deal anywhere else. I've been through probably about 8 memberships now over the last few years. I usually wait till there is about 7 dvds I want, then I join again to get them, then cancel.

Jeraden's right. You should be able to pull ~$8/dvd through columbia house after tax and shipping is accounted for. It is highly unlikely that you'll ever get a deal better than the initial sign-up offer, so once you've fulfilled the requirements, you cancel. I usually wait a while before signing back up, but I've had a handful of CH accounts already.

Unfortunately, enrollments dvds (the initial 49 cent ones) are usually about three month old releases. I would imagine that's still good for most people though.
