new raid-5 and hd tune...

so, I finally setup my new raid-5 with 4 300 gig HD's.

Now I was copying about 120 gigs of files from an external hard drive over, and noticed it was really slow. It was copying at avg 12.1mb/s

I ran hd-tune on my new raid and got this:

My comp specs are the same as in my SIG.

Any idea why it'd be so slow?

What RAID controller are you using, and have you installed the most recent drivers, etc? What did you use to measure the 12.1mb/s from your external hd? Also, how is the external connected (USB, 1394, 1394b, eSATA)? How are your internal disk to disk transfers?

The external drive is connected via USB (2.0 I think). The internal transfer I mentioned was just me doing a cut and paste on files from my windows drive to my raid drive (vista will tell you the transfer rate). I can run another utility if you know of one you'd like me to run.

I'm actually using my onboard RAID on my DS3R mobo.

Transfering data within the raid (ex. moving files from one folder to another within the raid array) is just about instant. I transfered over 100gigs at a time and it took a second or 2.

Moving files is always going to be super fast if you do it on the same drive. All it's doing is modifying file headers and such - it doesn't actually copy the files to the new folder and then delete them. It just basically says "you're in this folder now".

heh don't worry, I'm a CS major, and I know it only changes headers, but I actually feel it's much faster on the RAID than on any other HD's I've used

raid 5 on any non server motherboard sucks (in terms of speed), but teh 12megs per second suggest that the issue is with your external, try running hd-tune on the external again, I would guess that you will see lower bandwidth (probably that same 12megs) I recently had something go wrong in vista causing all of my externals to drop to around 12megs a second (they still work fine in xp) and I haven't found a solution (haven't spent much time looking as for most of what I use them for speed is not that much of an issue).
