New PSU a Dud?

Just received the Aero Cool AeroPowerII+ in the mail from Tiger Direct.

Plugged it in to watch the blue fans light up and start whirring away. I plugged, and flicked the switch.

Nada. All I hear is a faint high pitched squeal that comes out of it and then goes fades to silence.

IS this a dud, or am I just a noob?

Thanks,
Brick

is this a new computer? or is it just a new power supply for an existing computer? because when i built a comp for a friend about half a yr ago, we recieved a dead motherboard and the same "symptoms" occured like yours. nothing powered on, and it was because power was not flowing through the motherboard. i could hear the psu making that hissing noise and then shutting off. otherwise, if your computer was working before, then it's likely htat your psu is a bust.

It's a brand new, out of the box, power supply unit. It has never been part of a computer of mine before.

Not sure if a new PSU necessitates it being plugged into a mobo first. I tried to plug it into a CD Rom drive, and that was unsucessful in terms of giving it power.

Just thought I would hit up the forums to ensure I wasn't being a boob noob.

Thanks,
Brick

ohh, you need to have a motherboard hooked up to the psu in order for it to work properly. the motherboard is basically the key for the psu. like what i mentioned earlier when i built a comp for a friend, i had everything plugged in, even the fans, cd drives, and harddrives. still when i turned on the comp, nothing ran. the psu just went out. it was because the power wasnt going through the motherboard, so your problem is really because your psu needs to recognize the motherboard being plugged in first.

No, light on the mobo lights up? I think you got a dead PS. I dislike TigerDirect because IMO based on personal experience they have the worse tech support ever.

Not sure what you meant on this. So, you guys are saying:

If I plug the PSU into the motherboard, the PSU, fans, and LCD lights on the PSU should start working???

I thought all you had to do was just plug it in for a test?

Thanks,

You need to be able to turn the PSU on somehow, and the only safe way to do that, is to plug it into the motherboard, and use your PC's power switch to turn it on.

No go, still can't get it turned on.

Plug two cords into the mobo, and then I flick the power on PSU and power button on front of computer box: one longer, fatter plug, and one smaller.

No power, nada. Is this correct?

I think it's a dud. I think I am going to send it back and get an Antec True.

Any other ideas?

The Antec is probably a good idea in its own right, but if the Antec is working properly, it'll still do the same thing that your present unit is doing. You must push the power button on the front of your case, which tells the motherboard to tell the power supply to wake up.

edit: oh, I see you ARE pushing the case's power button. never mind that then! The case's power button is plugged into the correct pins on the motherboard, right?
