It really should have had the video output from the start. I'm sure UMD movies would have had a better change since you didnt have to buy the same movie twice. Now you can watch it at home or anywhere which is awesome. It does have audio output too right???

I would be shocked if it didn't, shouldn't it at least have a jack for headphones providing stereo output?

According to those pictures, you can see that the new PSP uses the same serial and audio port for the new video output. That means you'll only need one of those upcoming PSP composite, S-video, or component adapter to get video output via those ports (there are also rumours about the HDTV output). Although the 1st generation PSP also features the same ports it might not have the ability to do video output. It really depends on whether or not Sony had made any major hardware changes to the new system, since the 1st and 2nd generation both feature the same CPU.

Specification for the 1st generation PSP:

You can see the amount of functions Sony had added to PSP over the past few years. The Homebrew development had also proven the huge potential of the hardware that is almost 3 years old.

It seems not much different. I was hoping for some more hardware changes. The PSP was great when I first came out, but now the graphics are rather dated.

Was there ever a use for the IR port?

None of the games utilizes the IR port. Infrastructure mode uses the wi-fi where ad hoc mode uses the IR port. You can connect an universal IR keyboard to your PSP with homebrew applications.

The new USB port and the TV out are the only changes that interests me. They both seemed to be a hardware instead of a software change. If you take a look at the PSP peripheral list, it states "for PSP-2000 only" instead of the PSP-1XXX series.

I don't think the hardware is dated but rather the range of game selection is way too limited. Most of the games are just being ported from other platforms, and there are many original games that are based on the same fighting game structure.

The last thing the PSP needs to be is slimmer, but lighter and longer battery life are both good. Kind of weird that they claim that though, considering the battery is now 1200mah instead of 1800 for the previous one. I would've preferred it keep the same dimensions and still use the 1800mah battery for even more life.

Double the system ram is pretty cool though, I really hope the DRAM gets increased over 4mb for web browsing.

Nixing the IR port kinda sucks, there's a lot of potential there. Unless they finally release an official keyboard, then it's not that big of a deal.

I was kinda hoping they'd do more of an overhaul on the design of the unit though. A new analog stick would've been nice, cause frankly it's a POS. They also should've relocated it above the D-pad since it gets used a lot more often. The D-pad needs to be switched from that crappy sunk in design to a new 8-way one, that would make the fighters on the system actually playable. Four triggers would've been cool too for PS1 games, but using the analog stick isn't that bad I guess. And a little contour to the unit wouldn't have hurt, it's not the most comfortable thing to play on.
