I'm not a big gamer but my wife gave me a psp-3001. I know there's a big homebrew community but I never was clear as to what features homebrew brings. What can this guy do for a gadget fan who's not a big gamer?

Don't open it..take it back and use the money for something else.

IIRC the 3001 series was not moddable via the easy battery swap method and to be honest hacking the PSP is more trouble then it is worth. But you can put a bunch of emulators on it and play old ps1 stuff if you are into it...just not sure the newer slims are moddable like the original fat PSP.

You cannot flash "true" CFW onto it, but you can run homebrew and backups on it with stuff like chickHEN.

I don't see why you think PSP modding is more trouble than it's worth. All you have to do is put the chickHEN image files in your photo directory. When you look at the photos, it will crash the PSP and reboot it into CFW. You can put the PSP to sleep in this state and it will be fine, but if you fully cycle the power, you will have to re-do the photo procedure.

Furthermore, I''ve heard that the PSP's signing keys got hacked when PS3 did, so you might not even need CFW to run homebrew apps like emulators.

Sorry for the delay,
Didn't know that flashing was impossible since I'm now playing N64 roms and psp roms without issue. It's a little quirky (sometimes I need to reboot before the games are visible) but completely barable. SO MUCH FUN, actually. GBA roms worthwhile? Anything else worth checking out?

GBA emulation runs at 60fps IIRC. (I broke my PSP a long time ago :() Also, IIRC, SNES and PS1 emulation works quite well on it. (Especially PS1, as Sony wrote the emulator themselves)
