New PS4 version with 1TB drive

Can't you already upgrade the PS4 with a replacement drive on your own? Or does that violate the warranty?

Yes, you can upgrade the drive yourself. I'm just saying this is nice for new PS4 buyers if they get 1TB instead of 500GB for the same price.

Yes you could and it's a pretty simple process. I put in a 2TB which is probably overkill but it wasn't much more than a 1TB.

A 1TB hard drive is a nice upgrade especially with all games being installed completely and the disc being just used basically as drm after the install.

I didn't think 2TB was worth the extra cost. I put a 1TB Samsung SSHD in mine. Supposedly faster than a standard drive by a bit and was only $70.

It would be nice if Sony would implement external drive support like the XB1 in addition to a larger internal drive. Getting excited for 1TB is a bit hard when I have a 4TB connected to my Xbox. Isn't that why we have USB 3.0 in the first place?

We have it for faster charging and data transfer speeds. At this point, USB 3.0 is so commonplace that it would have been probably no price difference for Sony to stick with 2.0 and not support external HDDs, I'm guessing. It'd be nice to get external drive support, but it'd be even nicer for a new Xbox One SKU to support swapping the internal HDD.

I just want a cheaper PS4 so I can justify buying one to play The Show 🙁

This might enable that as allegedly there's internal changes to help lower costs. But I'm expecting it'll be $350 MSRP with some game bundle. $299 would be great, but I doubt it (well other than sales).

Also wish Nintendo would do a big Wii U price drop and/or update, although with the rumors about the next console sounding like it'll be here fairly soon (I'm guessing 2016), I'd be kinda leery of buying a Wii U at this point. Maybe if they come up with an even smaller and cheaper version that comes with a more normal controller and the system for like $99 (and a smaller tablet controller for $99). It'd fly off the shelves then. Shame they didn't think to do a bigger overhaul of the 3DS with it's revision (full 2nd joystick and integrate the Wii Us wireless display tech to replace the normal tablet). Then sell a new 3DS with Wii U bundle for $300 (and offer a deal so if you buy the Wii U version of say Smash Bros you'd get the 3DS version for free).

I was looking through old EGMs and it was stunning how quickly prices for the Gamecube/PS2/Xbox era fell. Granted it took a bit over 1.5 years for the PS2 to drop, but it got a 33% price drop (from $299 to $199), and within 6 months of their launch the Xbox had a similar 33% drop and the Gamecube had a 25% drop. And the Dreamcast was able to be had for $50. Summer of 2002 was an amazing time to be a gamer (price drops for all systems, Gamecube and Xbox both had excellent multiplayer games, PS2 was really hitting its stride, and you could get a crazy deal on Dreamcast, either by stores trying to clear stock or someone selling theirs with all the stuff they'd bought for it).

Of course they tried to limit price drops after that, but I was kinda hoping we might get a repeat of that this generation (with Microsoft matching Sony's $399 only for Sony to go to $299 or something), where Sony and Microsoft would try to get an edge by dropping the price (but I'm guessing Microsoft realized they couldn't win doing that as Sony could likely match their price drops).

The best thing about a newer SKU with a higher storage capacity is that it generally reduces the price of the older models. Maybe I'll finally grab a PS4.

I did SSD in mine, not really noticing a huge improvement for load times, anyone do a 7200RPM 1TB? Heat issues?

The 1TB PS4 is now official, coming to Europe on July 15th. There's no US launch date yet, but no doubt it will be coming.

There are also some details on an updated 500GB model which reduces power consumption by 8% and is slightly lighter.

The release for the 500GB model is still claiming the price is $400, which isn't a very good sign. I'm hoping that by the holidays the 1TB is going for $400 and the 500GB for $350.

They might keep both models at $400 but bundle a game with the 500GB (probably The Last of US) for the time being. I think it all depends if Sony is planning on phasing out the 500GB version completely.
