New PS3, looking for good mouse and keyboard combo...

I'm starting to ween myself from the PC upgrade treadmill and most of the folks I know have been using consoles exclusively for a while now, but being a PC weenie at heart I need my mouse and KB. This brings me to my question: what's the best KB and mouse combo for the PS3?

All recommendations are welcome, but please avoid berating the usage on the PS3 because that's a beef for another thread.

Vary few PS3 games support mouse and keyboard. UT3 is the only one that I know of. It's basically only useful for the web browser and fast typing in passwords, etc.

Any USB K+M will work.

Devs are still too lazy or unwilling to get real kb+mouse support for the consoles. Which is really annoying. As said above, only UT3 can do it so far.

Oh, crud. Good to know then because I was planning on using them with MW2. Saved me some cash :)

Well, I have been playing FPS games with a K&M and I am one happy camper.

I as well moved away from PC so that I stop spending time and money playing catchup, it was an obsession for me so I was so glad I moved away after all those years.

On my PS3, I have played and finished all of the Orange Box (HL2, EP1, EP2, TF2, Portal) , COD MW, BF 1943 and much more with a K&M.

The Solution:
-----------------

There are many ways to go about this:

* Your first option would be to get an XFPS Rateup / MAX Shooter PS3 adapter (pick the cheapest you can find). You'll find those online and mainly on Ebay, expect to pay ~$65 for a Maxshooter one and $80+ for an XFPS one

* Second option, is what I use. It's different.

My solution is way before the XFPS rateup adapter came about. Years ago, I devised my own makeshift solution. I used a SmartJoy Frag with a PS-Controller to USB adapter. I had to make some minor modifications to the circuitry of the SmartJoy frag adapter to allow it to give more current to my optical mouse (especially optical ones) using my electronics know how, I bypassed a transistor and that fixed the problem.

Also, you have to make sure you have a PS-USB adapter that supports the PS3's controller number allocation (usually the way you can tell, is that such PS-USB adapters have 1 through 4 LEDs on them just like a PS3 controller. The ones that don't, don't have LEDs 1 through 4 on them)

So there you have it. Nowadays there are plenty of people who figured this out and you can see many videos on youtube. SmartJoy Frag are rare to find and not always for a good price.

I suggest you go with the XFPS, it might save you some extra work, but I have never tried one, but from the videos I can tell it works.

Just play w/ the controller for awhile and you will get used to it.

Everyone always says some form of "I'm so used to KB+Mouse, there's no way I can get used to a controller", but the fact is, they just haven't given enough time.

I've played PC FPS for many years and still do, but at the same time, I have no issues w/ a controller. Don't worry if you suck at first with it, I know I was terrible at MW first time I played it online w/ a controller. Just takes time.

The wonderful thing about consoles is the fact that the developer know people who have down syndrome couldn't cut it with a KB/M combo. Therefore, they added auto aim into every single game ever. Now, this makes is particularly unfair if you are using something to allow KB/M with any game.

Don't worry about not being able to get used to a controller. They purposely make it fucking cake. Give it an hour or two and you'll be a natural.

I couldn't have said it better. I work with about 10 console gamers and they all insist that a controller is better and more precise than a keyboard+mouse. Idiots. Here's the situation I paint to them and they still can't comprehend how much better a mouse is.

Place 10 icons on the screen numbered 1-10. Make sure they are randomly scattered across the screen. Now, with a controller, click on them, in order. Then, do it with a mouse. Which one is going to do it faster? The mouse, by a landslide. Why? Because it's way more accurate. I also tell them how games such as GTA IV have auto aim on from the start on the console and not with the PC? Why? I don't think I have to answer that.

The problem is that many consoler gamers don't realize they auto-aim is essentially always on, and instead think they're just leet FPS players.

It was funny when Quake 3 came out for Dreamcast and these guys thought they were amazing players with controllers but got dominated every time by someone using the mouse and KB.

Pretty sure auto-aim doesn't exist in multiplayer modes, but there's no way to convince the k+m peeps that they should learn to use a controller, so, I'll just head out of here. Good luck with your search.

Seriously...KB+M is ALWAYS better. That isn't to say the controller sucks. If there's no choice, it's very intuitive for the most part.

It does... obviously depending on the game. In the Call of Duty games the single player auto-aim and multiplayer auto-aim are very different. In single player when you zoom in it automatically aims you at an enemy (if you aimed reasonably close). In multiplayer it doesn't do that, but if you are already aimed at an enemy it will automatically "follow" them. Same with Halo 3 multiplayer. It doesn't take all of the skill out of it, it just helps you.

I don't care to convince them to learn to use a controller, but if they're unable to do it I wish they'd just stick with the PC. I guess there may be some joy in "owning" a bunch of people that you know are using inferior controls, but I just couldn't get any satisfaction out of it.

The way auto aim works in multiplayer is simple. You have a set radius of your veiw (like .03% or 360 degrees) that you will hit your target whether you're on perfectly or not. Your cross hairs also have a "margin of error" that the game compensates for you.

In MW2, this is very apparent because you can shoot around corners. In Halo 3, snipe while moving the rifle fast. In PC gaming, this doesn't exist. You have a mouse which you can move quickly to that exact point. You either hit or you miss.

Also, if you're playing console games, you shouldn't expect to be a hardcore KB/M player. You have to make the switch assuming you'll use the controllers.

Quite so. Although with more and more titles never coming to PC or being inferior and buggy vs a console counterpart, many gamers find themselves wishing it was at least an option.

better is subjective, it's an opinion.

personally i like gaming FPS with controllers a lot more than with a mouse. i grew up pc gaming and i would much rather play a console FPS now a days than the PC version.

but precisin on a controller is nowhere near that of a mouse, that is just a fact, as stated above.

I've tried countless times and I just can't get used to using a controller for an FPS. I wish I could, I'd rather sit on my couch and play my PS3.

The reason for the lack of support, as others have stated, is that it's UNFAIR to other players on the PS3/X360. If the systems had shipped with KB/M combo then it would fine BUT the systems are designed for CONTROLLERS. I tried a KB/M with an adaptor on PS3 and it honestly felt like I was cheating as it was so easy to kill people.

Well fwiw, I've leveled up to 24 in MW2 and I still feel completely spastic. I mean there are simply no innate fine motor controls in the muscles of my thumbs. Sometimes when I aim, my thumbs just go "duuuuurrrr PUSH" and the cross hair just goes wide as all hell for no damn reason. I'm committed to learning this, but it's fucking annoying to think that with a mouse and keyboard I could rape pubs in any game I played but I can't even AIM in the direction of the enemy with this set up. I do like the couch though, much more comfortable than some office chair.

I'm looking for a keyboard / mouse - not for gaming, but just for whenever I might need to do more text inputting than i'd care to do with the controller.

I saw a "rocketfish" bluetooth kb / mouse combo @ future shop priced decently at $50 or so but they were sold out... anyone have one of these?

For many, 24 levels is not enough play time to get used to it. Keep going at it, some people get used to it quicker, while others take much more time. In the end though, everyone can do it though.

Whats enough time? I've played PC games mostly and got a PS3 earlier this year. I played several games with it, mostly 3rd person type games and even with those I have trouble moving and aiming like I could on a PC with KB+M.

I'd suggest picking up an XIM (the original, the XIM360 only works with the 360) and a PS2 to PS3 adapter.

http://xim360.com/community/index.php?board=37.0

For a list of adapters that work look here: http://xim360.com/community/index.php?topic=2449.0

The XIM software allows you to tweak various settings like sensitivity and map keys from your computers keyboard and mouse to control games. It was originally made to work with the 360 but it will also work with a PS3 if you have the right adapter.

I use the Logitech Cordless Mediaboard Pro with my PS3. It has a trackpad built-in, which is more convenient than balancing a mouse on the arm of the chair. :)

Amazon has it for $54.
