New PS2 Reliability?

I'm planning on getting a PS2 for Christmas, but was wondering about their reliability. I've heard that lots of people have had problems with their first-gen PS2s, and I'm planning on getting the new slim model. Has anyone heard of any problems with these?

I got a PS2 the december after the consol was released, and it still runs fun.

I've had the slimline model since it was released, no problems here.

Mine has been working fine, albeit with light use, since May of '05..

I absolutely torture mine. I bought it new back in early October and have been pushing the limits quite a bit. It's fine. It crashes every now and then.
