New PS2 on Wide screen Display issue

when I hook up my new ps2 (slim one) to either of my widescreen TV's (tried with both component and composite connections), there is a blank strip on the left side because the picture does not cover the whole screen...when I hook it to a regular TV, it is fine.

I tried using all 3 settings in the regular PS2 menu (Full, 4:3 and 16:9) and all of them leave that black stripe down the left side...

is there a service menu that can be accessed to adjust this??? or is my unit defective?

had it for 3 months now, but just noticed it last week...

* * * Update 04/14/05

Sony sent me a brand spankin new unit...I only returned the console and ac adapter and they sent me back a new console in the box with controller, audio/video cables, etc...

there is still very tiny strip of black (about 1/8" inch or so), but it is much better than before...

I believe that the aspect ratio settings for the PS2 relate mostly to DVD playback. For games, the game has to specifically support widescreen playback (usually there are setup menus to enable this).

When I look at the PS2 in Best Buy etc, the picture covers the entire screen...on mine, there is a black stripe (about 2" wide) just down the left side of the screen. The picture does cover all the way to the edge on the right side...

I am hold with Sony right now...they are trying to tell me it's my TV...both since this happens on a Sony and Toshiba wide screen, i think it is the unit itself...

You can set your widescreen TV in "stretch" mode for 4:3 sources. This will eliminate the bars on the side of the screen but distort your image slightly. This is most likely what Best Buy has enabled, unless they were demoing a game with 16:9 support.

EDIT: NM, I just re-read what you said. The bar is only on the left side.

I agree with Kev's suggestion below. Perhaps you can re-center the image within the PS2 menu.

Thats more likely due to your RPTV. Have you tried other games or is it present like that on ALL your games?

My ps2 fills 'practically' the whole screen and is ever so slight that it doesn't fill it in.

You can adjust the screen within most games. I know from T3 onwards that you can do it to 'centre' the image to how you want. Most games have this option also.
