I have not built a new system in years, it appears that power is more important than ever before and its leaving me really questioning what I should get.

New system will be:
E6750 or q6600 (or even Q9450 or E8400 if they ever release)
Gigabyte P35-DS3R
4 GB DDR2 800
8800GT 512 or 8800GTS 512 (new GTS)
2 x DVD burner
2 x SATA HDD
1 x IDE HDD

Also will have a few standard USB devices.

How large do I need to go? I was thinking something well below 500 should be ok. I may do a little overclocking but definitely no SLI here. I would like something as efficient as possible, I would prefer modular but its not required.

Is there any downside from having too large a supply? (will it consume more power / make more heat)

Thanks

Corsair 520HX- $105 AR:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817139001

It's modular, efficient, and has some headroom.

No, it won't consume more power than it needs to(unless its efficiency is worse than what you have now) if that's what you mean, but if you meant will it be more power hungry than what you have now; possibly.

I hope that answered most of your questions correctly.

I had read many recomendations for the 520HX, just seemed to be a bit of overkill and I was afraid I would waste power.

What I meant by "consume more power" is if I only need 400 watts and I feed it with a 500 or 1000 will the 1000 actually actually use or draw more power (from the wall) assuming they have similar efficiency? Not trying to build a super green PC or anything but I try and atleast be somewhat conscience of waste :)

No real budget within reason, I want something that will last and will be effieicent (for power consumption reasons and to keep it running cool). As long as a powersupply larger than I need for the components I run does not actaully draw more power than a smaller supply I have no problem buying something big.

No, but depending on the quality of the 1000W it could run cooler/quieter since it is only under a 40% (400W) load. It could also have better voltage regulation, less ripple, etc.

I guess that solves it then I will go with one of the 500 or 600ish corsair HX supplies, they are supposedly really efficient and are modular (which I think I want).

I'm building basically the same rig as the OP, and I just bought a Enermax NoiseTaker II 485W on sale. But now after reading many articles on PSU, I'm a little concerned. So for the same setup as the OP, is the Enermax NT II 485W good enough? I too will not do much OC, and no SLi or Crossfire. Thanks.

I hope the OP wont mind me borrowing his post. :D

I personally think that Enermax PSU's are up to snuff these day's, they were good a few years ago but now it seems a lot of people are having them die on them. There's a user on jonnyguru thats had 2 Enermax liberties die, one died in 1 year, had it RMA'd and replaced, the replacement died 1 year later. There's also reports at badcaps I believe of them making a bit of electrical noise IIRC.

So really, i'd have to say it will be hit or miss on how long it lasts, but it should power your rig.
