I build rigs for people, as I am sure many people here do, on the side for some extra cash. My most recent build (still in progress) has included several parts from this section of the fourm. I am thinking about building a rig with parts only from the hot deals section. Anyone know if that has been done yet?

God bless you. I got out of the biz about two years ago when Dell began offering decent computers at WalMart prices (and with support -- how annoying it was to give $300 worth of support to make $100).

Ya, unless you have a Fry's close, there aren't too many CPU/mobo deals. And with Dell's prices being so damn low... it's hard to beat when it comes with free service too.

Outpost has a socket 754 motherboard and 3000+ CPU for $159.99 right now.

I'm finding that justifying building a machine is getting a little hard. I work at Circuit City, and they have the Gateway 835 GM for $850. That's a Pentium D 820, a gig of RAM, 250GB SATA HD, DVDRW, DVD-ROM. Heck, pay $150 more AR, and you get a 17" LCD and a Canon IP1500 printer. (The printer sucks, but still...)

The way that works best for me is to just jump on the REALLY excellent deals as they happen and hopefully accumulate all the parts but it's extremely rare to find all the components in a week or two at the lowest prices. Extreme deals?...I'll try to get multiples when memory or hard drives get seriously low. Optical drives are the same way. I try to keep at least one or 2 of all those on hand(new) for tech support isthues and/ornew builds. The cpu/mobo combo's I generally buy based on the needs of the client...cheapskates get Outpost combos and intelligent clients get NewEgg/ZZF/Monarch combo's.
I like to have an extra case/psu on hand also but I mostly just use my old cases which are in good condition.

Another factor to consider is how current your rig is going to be. Many really hot deals are hot because they are sellouts, clearances, or older products about to be replaced, etc. Sales on brand new gear exist but you still pay a pretty penny just because it's new. So if staying absolutely current is not important, you can probably save up parts over time from hot deals (maintain a spare parts bin) and use them as needed.

For the real penny-pincher, there's the FAR rig where everything is (essentially) free. I haven't made one yet but I've come very close by mixing recycled parts (stuff they throw out at the office, as well as my own old stuff sitting about) and FAR hot deal parts from this forum. This is getting harder to do with the decrease in good FAR deals.
