New Procs for AMD are on the way (I think)

I am not sure how many of you read the Anandtech buyers guide (high end system). I follow it fairly religoiusly since I am getting ready for a new build in June / July. Check out the price checker at the bottom of the processor recommendation page: AMD 64 Price Drop!

The prices for the whole 64 line are dropping, especially for the FX 51 & 53. A new speed bumb should be coming with socket 939 and these price drops would correspond with reseller getting rid of some stock before the May 25th launch 🙂

I guess there won't be delays? But then again, I could be reading too much into this?
😉

Hmm, more and more reasons keep coming up for me to NOT buy this system now. But I want it sooo badly. I think I will end up waiting but not before I say damn all this summer progress.

LOL...... I'm dying here too (waiting to buy). June 1 you should see the first socket 939 boards with PCI-E slots (I'm guessing these will be VIA chipsets, looking at their roadmap).

If I can wait just a little longer (I'm looking at the end of June for myself for everything I want to be out)

I don't want to go PCIe yet. I think that although the concept is good I can wait for about 2 years for them to perfect the technology. Also by the time I buy a next gen video card to take advantage of it I will buy a whole new mobo anyways.

Just know that I feel your pain jr...

man I can't wait for 939 to come out. I'm going to get the new 939 socket processor with pci-express. ATI releases the new vid cards this summe!!!!!! WOOTT

Stupid question... but why is the 939 interface superior to the current? And is 939 likely to change anytime within the next 6 months? (Why the change anyway?)

Also, is PCI-E backwards compatible with older PCI cards?

Socket 939 is superior because it will have a new core (Newcastle), those chips will have better support for Cool n' Quiet (Higher speeds at the same low temps), will only have 512KB of L2 Cache, but will make up for it by supporting Dual Channel Memory. The only changes you will see with Socket 939 are the changes to use PCI Express, and a move to the BTX format, but I am not sure whether the latter will happen in then ext six months or not. At some point you will also see a move to DDR II, but probably not for a year or so, as a new revision of the chips will have to come out with an onboard memory controller capable of handling it. PCI Express is not backawards compatible with older PCI cards.

Regarding PCI-E.... are the system boards that support PCI-E likely to have legacy PCI slots, or will they generally be totally PCI-E?

It really depends on the board manufacturer. Some will have PCI-E x 16 (grahpics) with PCI slots and some may opt for PCI-E x 1 to replace the PCI slots... I'm interested to see who will have what. It looks like VIA may try to have PCI-E and AGP support on some of their boards??? I can't wait to see 🙂
