New Processors = Add Ram & New Mobo?

If I were to upgrade to the new Intel Hyper Threading(HT) processors, does that mean I need mobo as well? What about the AMD Dual Channel DDR? Must I have a new mobo & addition DDR to run it? If running at their max, which is better, the Intel HT or the AMD Dual Channel DDR processors?

Wowah, you got a lot of problems here! Lets try to fix this out..... First of all, theres no such thing as a AMD Dual Channel DDR processor, there is a Intel Granite Bay dual DDR Mother-Board, this motherboard uses 2 sticks of DDR ram, and runs them like RAID, making them extremely fast. AMD's "Dual Channel" CPU(Hammer), isnt out yet.... I read a couple months ago that HT chips will need a additional power source, you can still run the chip, but it would not run to its full speed.

About upgrading: you dont need new RAM or more RAM, I'm not 100% sure about the MotherBoard, though.

Hope This helps :)

Without knowing what mobo you have now, it's impossible to say if you'll need a new one or not. Tell us exactly what you have now.

By AMD dual-channel DDR, I bet you mean nForce2. Again, without knowing what you have now... ;) If you have two matching sticks of DDR266, DDR333 or DDR400, then you can use either AMD or Intel dual-channel-DDR boards. With the 333MHz-based AMD CPUs such as the 2700+ and 2800+, you would want the RAM to be at least DDR333.

If you meant a dual-CPU AMD system, the two virtual CPUs on a HT P4 aren't going to compare to a true dualie of either Intel or AMD brand, unless your workload consists mainly of running SiSoft Sandra all day. ;) Real CPUs are better than virtual ones. The AMD dualies have proven to be quite strong *if* you have a situation where dual CPUs actually can be put to work to your advantage, and are using a dual-aware operating system such as WinNT 4.0, Win2000, or WinXP Professional.

Thanks for the info. :)

I have an Intel set running at 2.4Ghz on a MSI 845E Max2 533Mhz mobo & using 1 256MB DDR333. If I were to upgrade the processor to Intel 3Ghz with HT feature, does that mean I need to change the mobo & ram?

As for the AMD, if I get a nForce 2 mobo, do I need to get 2 DDR333 to get the Dual channel DDR? Can I just use 1?

Which is better? An Intel 3Ghz with HT or an AMD XP2800 with Dual Channel DDR?

Dunno about the mobo/chipset, but your ram should be ok.

For the nforce2, you would need 2 sticks. Wouldn't hurt you to get a 2nd stick for either rig, as 256 is pretty much bare minimum nowadays.

Benchies have the P4 @ 3ghz faster than the XP @ ~2.4ghz.

You will need a new motherboard, according to MSI: link At this point, if you want to build a 3.06GHz rig, wait for the dual-channel chipset from Intel (Granite Bay) and get an identical second stick of RAM, or two new identical ones.
