new processor... rough patch?

Just got my 2500 barton in the mail and on the top of the cpu there seems to be a 'rough' patch, a break in the purple-ish finish. It looks to be almost perfectly square, upon further inspection(with a jewler's glass) it looks almost corroded. Is this standard? Should i try applying thermal paste and hoping for the best? Or should I just RMA it back to newegg?

That's perfectly normal. I don't know what it is, but I've handled enough CPUs to tell you that it's fine!
