I have a ASUS P3B-F Slot 1 motherboard but I would like to get a P3 1GHz upgrade from my Celeron 433. I already have the Slotkey adapter. Will the P3 1GHz work in my old motherboard? Thanks

I don't think the P3B-F BIOS will support anything faster than a PIII 600. It's also a 440BX chipset which only supports 66 MHz or 100 MHz front side bus speeds. The FCPGA 1GHz PIII is designed to run on a 133 FSB, although it should run fine at a lower front side bus speed. I believe that the PIII also operates at a lower core voltage than the Celeron.

Anybody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Challenger: The CPU is 10x100 right? Unless you OC the 7.5x133, but yeah, there are 100Mhz bus 1Ghz chips, so those should run fine.

Yes, the P3B-F will support any speed processor (with the probable exception of the upcoming Tualatin), so long as you have the latest BIOS update. All revisions of the P3B-F do not have voltage problems related to older revisions of the P2B. The P2B family of boards were completely different anyway.

The latest BIOSes are Version 1006 Final and 1008 Beta 002. I'd go with 1008 Beta 002 as it has full support for the latest cC0 and cD0 stepping CPUs.

The 1GHz Pentium III is available as both a 100MHz FSB part and a 133MHz FSB part.

If you decide to purchase the 133MHz FSB version, due to the lack of 1/2 AGP divider on the BX chipset, you will be running the AGP slot out of spec at 89MHz. PCI will run at 33MHz, so nothing to worry about there.

Ok so the ASUS P3B-F does work with P3 1GHz but are there P3 1GHz available in 10x100 MHz configuration? They don't seem to be widespread. Where might I get these? Thanks guys for you help so far.

You can go here:

Googlegear.com

Mwave.com

There are others. Check Pricewatch.com under the P3 1Ghz and the SECC2 Slot 1 100 Mhz FSB parts will start at about page 7.

Googlegear seems to be the least expensive. I bought mine for $238 locally from a company in Walnut, California near the City of Industry.

If you can't wait for the newer Intel parts coming out this month, this is a nice upgrade to that Slot 1 motherboard. Granted, it's an expensive upgrade.

I wouldnt go as far as saying the P3B-F will run ALL P3s. I would say that it does run all of the P3 coppermines on 100MHz front side bus. Nothing is guarranteed with BX on 133MHz.
