A Google for "ND3500 32X CD media" returned this, which discusses the issue, and here is the officially-supported media list for the ND3500. There's only a single brand of 48X-rated disc that will burn at 48X, Verbatim DataLifePlus (MCC) media. Strangely, they don't list T-Y CD-R media as supported at all, but I swear that I've read reports on other CDR forums about people being able to burn at 48X with those too.

My NEC 3500A on some lower quality media(I think) rated somewhere between 32x~40x only burns them at 24x now. used to be 32x before I upgraded to 2.18 but other than that little spec, all is good with the drive.

AnandTech's review show NEC to be the fastest of those they tested with an average speed of 36X. The speed rating given by a manufacturer is always the best you can do with the best media for a short burst rather than the average speed for the entire disk. No one should ever beleave manufacturers, claims to be the average result that everyone can expect. This is true for cars, TV's, dishwashers, etc.

Mine will burn CD's @ 48X no problem - using Nero & firmware 2.18 & several types of media ( TDK, HP, Etc)

Get the latest firmware and you will be all set :)

My 3500 does 40X on amost anything I have put in there, except on some of those black PNY CDRs (24x), and on Verbatim CDRs it does 48X. I have 100 TY blanks waiting to, but I havent tried them yet.

When I burn DVDs, it's kind of touchy. Before I updated the firmware a while back, it would burn my Ritek DVD+Rs at 8x, now it's 4x, but some Verbatims that were 4x now burn at 8X, and the three Fujis I had left, that burned at 8X before, burned at 16. Some mystery brand ones a friend gave never worked period, but now they ALMOST finish before they are announced as coasters. Before the update, It was an instant coaster as soon as the burn started.
