I got it to work above 8x, but now I have a new problem:

Its max CD-R Burning speed is 32x.

I bought 52x rated Memorex Media, and this drive supposedly supports up to 48x burn speeds.

I burned a few CD's, but it only let me burn up to 32x.

I also did the drive test on Nero 6, and it platued at 32x.

Anybody here getting better burn speeds? I don't MIND 32x, but I bought a drive capable of 48x, and I want to be able to use it.

TIA

Its a nice drive, and supposedly is very reliable ect, but if I can't burn past 32x, that definately makes me feel a little cheated.

It has the newest Firmware, which is 2.18. It just will NOT go above 32x. Very annoying.

I burn CD's at 48x, and have no problems burning (cheap???) TDK 4X media at 8X. I need some better DVD's than 4X. I have had not one coaster, even with 50 ultra cheap no name DVD's. I love my NEC 3500a.

I am sorry but what does that have to do with it??? I bought it from newegg and it said 48x and it only burns 32x....

I think a class action lawsuit is in order if they fail to live up to claims. Why should I take the chance of destroying my drive to falsh it to something they are selling under the premise it can already do.....

I feel cheated to. I thought I had just read it wrong but now I have seen this twice and it appears many ppl bought and thought it would do 48x cd-r

Same here. I bought a Lite-On 52x32x52x16 Combo drive so I could burn CD-Rs at full speed.

Last week I tried flashing to firmware 2.18, but it fried BOTH drives and I had to buy new ones :| That's my first bad flash in 10 years. I followed NEC's directions and disabled the Lite-On as they'd instructed, but after the flash, neither drive could read an entire DVD without getting stuck (error or infinite pause in playback). The Lite-On nearly failed to burn a CD-R by "successfully" writing the disc, but then it was barely readable in certain spots on other players. They'd slow down to very low speeds and then speed back up. I put each drive in another computer by themselves. I tried flashing the Lite-On to the latest firmware, but it still had problems afterwards. I tried flashing the 3500A back to version 2.16. That didn't help either. Whatever...it sucked.

I don't have an NEC but I have seen this happen, The people that are only getting 32X Burns, what brand and speed Media you using? The one person above that gets 48X burns uses Verbatim. What about the rest of you? I have a 40X Sony and 48X Lite On as well as a 52X Lite on and there are these strange looking TDK's that are rated for 40x in Nero or Roxio will not go above 32x no matter what I do but my Verbatim's and other TDKs all burn at the full speed of the burner I am using. Try different media. Again what brands are you with the problem using? I have seen this many times with certain CDR blanks.

I went and got Memorex 52x. I should have NO problem getting 48x burns out of it. But every software program ect says the max speed period is 32x. And thats all I have been able to burn at.

I am only able to burn at 8X. Did your ND-3500A burn at 32X out of the box?

It would appear that this drive is very picky about CDRs and the maximum burning speed it will allow. I previously had some x24 cdrs which burnt at x52 with my liteon cdr burner but the maximum speed I could get with the 3500 was x16.

Well I'm glad I just wasted $ on a 100spindle of 52x Memorex that burns at 32x then =

I hate picky components! Looks like I'll be going for TDK's next, and I'll buy a small batch first to make sure.

honestly i dont see the big deal.... sure i would want it to work at full speed. but in reality, the difference between a full CD at 32x and a full CD at 48x is under a minute with this drive.

DON'T BUY NEC!!!:disgust:

It does.. you just need to use decent-quality media. Which means mostly just T-Y CD-R discs. (And correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most of those speed specs actually refer to "max" speeds? They don't, and can't, guarantee burning *every* cheapo media at max speeds, that would leave you with a smoldering pile of coasters, if nothing else, or overload the laser and kill the drive.) It's also well-known that most optical burners need to be flashed to the newest firmware for best media-compatibility, especially DVD burners.

That's because that media is cheap CMC garbage, you're better-off not burning it faster than 32X even if your drive supports it, if you want quality burns. Trust me, I've burned enough of those cheap discs to know. They are utterly unusable for console stuff, no matter what speed they are burned at. Better-quality discs work fine, even burned at 48-52X.

I wasn't commenting one way or another of whether mine can or cannot do it. I have good TDK stuff but I dont think it is rated for that. I however was responding to the possible assertion that maybe I need to upgrade the firmware to ever do it. If that is the case then I should be able to get one that is working as advertised....

It may very well burn 48x....I have tried actuall 3 types of cd-rs and I have only seen 32x as an option ever..no more no less...

So what media do you recommend that can burn 48x speeds???

Most mfgs don't give end-user support for OEM products. Why are you singling out NEC because you didn't understand that? Why don't you call the actual company that you purchased it from for support?
