Here's my system:
ECS K7S5A
Athlon xp 1600
2x 256 Crucial pc133
Radeon 9500pro

Ok, so I did a fresh install of XP when I first installed the 9500. Had no problems for a while, but now, when I play games it crashes. I've really only been playing Jedi Outcast and BF1942. It always crashes the same way. Total freeze, with either a looping of the sound last played at the freeze or almost like a high pitched sound that loops. It seemed to get progressively worse too. Like I said, no problems in the beginning, then it would do it every now and then, and now it will do it before I've even started playing the game (at game menu, inside the game). I thought maybe it was the sound. I am using the soundblaster live, and felt like I was getting unusual pops and crackles, so I moved it to another pci slot and uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers. Well, while I was moving the sound card, I realized that my psu is only 250 watts. I know that ATI recommends at least 300w. I thought that this may also be the problem. I only have one hard drive and one cdrw, and of course, the vid card. It was only games but then the other day I tried to watch a particularly long and somewhat high def. movie file that I had dloaded and my pc crashed the same way. Never done it with anything else but games, and has never done this with any other movie files. So...Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I know a little about pc's but not enought to figure this out. Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

Could also be heat. My PIII 733 used to work fine until the games mode, in which it would ramdomly lock up, and sounds would loop, and all kinds of nonsense. A Volcano 5 fixed it for me, despite it being a HP Complete system, and never oc'd. I thought it odd that the stock fan, of a package system, would not be enough, but it wasn't.

You may be surprised. I also have an ECS poopy mobo, which I am having problems with in a more recent post. And I had a decent video card (as good as was considered 1-2 years ago)... But still... The heat... Didnt register as overheating, chip didnt fry, no oc'ing. But when I started up Counterstrike, anywhere from a minute, to a couple hours, and it would just freeze. If you are using a stock fan, just look at this as an option.

Ok, I have a new problem now. This just happened for the second time. I tried to play a game and it crashed the same way. Well this time my graphics went all screwy, and when I restarted, at the initial boot, it told me checksum/cmos setup incorrect. It gave me 2 option...to go to setup or boot with default settings. I go to setup and the cpu speed and memory speed ar changed. I set them back accordingly and it boots up. Any ideas now? I'll definitley look into the temp issue. Thanks for the tips there.

That Enlight looks like a great deal. I'm gonna spring for a new psu anyway, even if that's not the prob.

That would rule out the power supply, anyway, and the K7S5A has a bit of a reputation for liking decent 300W+ power supplies. Some people have also found that the stock heatsink on the motherboard's chip is not cooling it adequately, so if you wanted to try something else first, try positioning a house fan or a case fan so it blows at the motherboard's heatsink, and see if this helps stabilize the system. Good luck with the troubleshooting :D
