Hi
well i decided to download the combination install/live dvd from ubuntu to try. I know in the past that nero express did not allow me to burn an .iso to a dvd. What do i do with the file to get it to be a bootable dvd? is there a difference between an .iso intended for a CD as opposed to an .iso intended for a DVD?

So Nero Express can't burn an ISO image?

You just need a program that has the ability to burn images, as burning an ISO file to a data DVD won't work (the DVD won't be bootable).

There's several free burning programs out there that can handle this....DeepBurner, CD Burner XP, BurnAtOnce.

Here's a free program that all it does is burn CD/DVDs from ISO images.

Not really, just the size. Of course you might run into the occasional misnamed image that is really a UDF filesystem image called an ISO but even UDF works on CDs if the image is small enough.

Nero does it but not nero express. Just open Nero, close the wizard, then open the ISO file.

well i thought i would contain my ignorance in one post...

well i got the iso burnt, and when i go to load the live version of ubuntu (5.10), i get teh same problem as with ubuntu 4.10 on my hard drive:

when ubuntu starts, the screen on my dell 2405fpw goes black and i cannot do anything. I just says something along the lines of "D-sub, cannot display this mode" or something like that. I hve a feeling this is due to widescreen or the high resolution of the monitor or something. how can i proceed?

It's probably trying to do a display size that your monitor can't support. Either it's to small or at a unusual resolution. LCDs are probably a bit limited compared to nicer CRTs on supported resolutions.

On your keyboard you can tell if the machine has locked up or not by hitting the caps lock key or numlock key. Those lights are controlled by the computer and if it's locked up then it won't change.

Let it boot up, and after 5 minutes or so it should be booted up all the way. Try switching to a virtual console, which should use regular vga settings, by going ctrl-alt-F1. Also you can try ctrl-alt-backspace.

See if that gets to a resolution that your monitor can support.

Otherwise try knoppix and see if that works or try out the Ubuntu forums for help. 2405fpw is not a uncommon monitor and other people may have run into the same issues and would have a specific fix for you to try. Also developers tend to pay close attention to installation issues.

That's weird, my version of Nero Express (5.5.10.53) has an option to burn a "Disc image or saved project"

Maybe they removed it from later versions?
