New printer problems.

Just bought a new printer. Canon PIXMA MP560

It was extremely easy to set up. I am using it wirelessly and the test page printed fine. Problem is now when I want to print, I get the notification that the printer is offline???? The green power light is on as is the blue Wi-Fi light so it's not off. I don't even see any type of Auto-power off option in the settings (like my older canon printer did) so I don't think it's going to "sleep".

If I turn it off and then back on, it prints fine. But this defeats the purpose of having it wireless.

Anyone know what could be going on?

Forgot to add. I found the Use Printer Offline option and I checked it but it still doesn't work.

Make sure that the wireless IP address is listed as a permanent exception in whatever firewall software you are using. It may be being blocked.

No software firewall. Just the router firewall. Would there be the same option in there?

You don't have Windows Defender working? No AV suite? And, the router NAT firewall also needs to get a green light for the printer. Does it have any sort of as utility?

Oh, I forgot. I do have Microsoft Security Essentials or whatever it's called. Not at home right now to check.

But, before we get into that, since I can print if I power it off then back on, would any software be the likely cause of this issue?

OK - when you power off and on, it causes the router and computer to refind the IP address. Can you connect the printer to the router via CAT cable and try it w/o wireless? I have a wireless deskjet, but the cable works better and is more reliable. It does have a relationship with your overall wireless security level.

thanks corky. I can look at it when I get home. I can test the cat5 wired just to see if it works. I may end up connecting it via usb to one of the pc's and then printing through the network that way. I just don't want to have to do that because then the pc it's connected to needs to be powered on when I want to print from my pc. And there's no room to put it near my pc. I was hoping wireless worked better than this. :hmm:

I have two printers connected to a router by CAT5. I have three computers, and each of the printers is then installed as a network printer to each of the three computers. It works for me.

If you have the printer connected by network cable in addition to wireless, check the documentation to make sure that the printer supports accepting print jobs on both interfaces simultaneously. One of my clients had an HP printer that was disappearing from the network - it turned out that it could only use one interface at a time, and therefore wouldn't use wireless if there was a network cable plugged into it.

Good luck!

OK, still stumped on how to resolve this. Unless I am crazy the printer does not have an rj45 port on it so I can't test a wired set up. But I think corky nailed it earlier saying the ip address changes. I have searched the manual but don't see any way to change the ip address.

i remember when I first set it up it was 192.xxx.xxx.109. Just looked at it now and it 192.xxx.xxx.101. So, if I can figure out how to change it and also make sure it's the same within widows, i should be good, right?

The way the IP address change can be done is to unplug the router's power cable, then plug it back in. That forces the system to find the new IP address.

yeah, but that shouldn't be happening.

I called canon and although the guy was trying to be helpful, he wasn't. everything he suggested were things I have tried. He ended up saying it was a windows issue somehow. That the port was going idle or something to that effect. I don't have my pc set up to sleep/suspend/hibernate or anything like that. The only thing that powers off is my LCD after 20 minutes. He suggested I call microsoft. :D

Not really sure what else to do besides connect it to a machine via usb and use it through the network that way.

And, the more I think about it, I don't know if it is ip address related. Because if it's not working and I go to the settings of the printer it list the ip address as .101. If I power it off and back on, it works and the ip address is still .101.

And things get a little more strange.

Sol, i went on canons site tonight jsut to look around ad see if I see anyhitng helpful. I went to the drivers page even though I looked there sometime a few days ago (also, when I called Canon yesterday, the rep told me there were no new drivers for the unit). and I see some drivers. They are listed as being released in march though????? I went ahead and downloaded them to see if it would help my issue. Strange thing is when I installed the drivers it needed to know if my printer was USB or network/wireless. Of course I chose wireless and figured it wouldn't be able to find it because it is "offline". o my surprise it found the printer and installed the drivers fine. I even printed a page after it was finished.

Now, I doubt this will fix my issue but I thought it might be worth mentioning.
