New printer HP 5150 probs

I just got my new HP 5150 printer from Apple. I got it for $99 with a $99 rebate so I guess I don't have much to complain about. BUt here goes. While in the Apple store the salesman really sold me on this printer by showing me a print that he made off of it. I know its a discout printer and dosen't have the print quality that you would expect from a higher priced model. But the print quality is horrible. Tons of banding and dithering while printing photos makes this pretty much useless to me. Do new printers need time to "break-in?" I've only made a couple of prints but I haven't seen a increase in quality. Any suggestions or comments?

It is a cheap printer, but it shouldnt be that bad. Do you have an option to align the print cartridges somewhere? If so, do it.

Try running the print head utility to clean and re-allign the print head. You might have to run it several times to get good results.

Consider taking your cardridges back to the salesman, see how well they print in the printer in the store. Even if yours is a lower end model the print heads are the same as the high end printer, you should be able to get a good high quality print. If you cannot get good results after an alginment have the cartridges checked.
