new printer fails to print

HP1018, that is a laser one.
Showing as HP1018 i.e. correctly in control panel.
Driver installed, USB is fine, paper and toner are in, green "ready" light on, all looks sweet and perfect but when I try to print a test page I am getting "fail to print" error
(the one in a yellow balloon). If I try to print a note pad document no error msg shows. The job is added to the queue (status: "printing") but nothing happens, printer won't spit anything out.

EDIT: this is a new printer, never used before, trying to get it to work for the first time...

Done sofar:
1) rebooted
2) reinstalled driver (both XP and one from CD)
3) turned the printer off and on again
4) reset print spooler service under the administrative tools in control panel
5) cleared print queue a number of times

Still no luck. Any ideas?

I would check again to make sure all pieces of tape, cardboard, etc. used for shipping are removed from the printer. Try a different usb cable. Does the printer have a diagnostic mode?

Usb connection does not seem to be a problem as PC recognizes the printer. The ready light is on.
There are no more cardboard pieces in the printer.
This is a cheap printer with two LEDs.
One indicates readiness and the other indicates problems. No diagnostic mode as such...
Well, I look into this when I get home.

There is a "correct" sequence that must be followed - eg install software, connect printer to power - power PC down hook up printer to pc etc etc.

That is exactly correct, Slowlearner.

Even most IT professionals, fail this one, because most of them think they know it all and they refuse to read in installation instructions that came with the printer.

Well, instructions said under XP connect it to PC and let OS recognize the printer and install the driver for it. It's difficult to confuse sewuence here. But then I installed the software from CD while the printer was connected to USB. What should I do now?

okay slowlearner

I did not look at HP website before installing the printer.
I looked at the leaflet that shows installation in steps.
I followed this steps and ended up with failed to print error msg...

Thanks for the link,
now I followed these steps and installed the printer on 2nd PC with no problem.

But it still acts up on the first PC...
Many thanks for help so far.

Would you or anyone know the registry entries for HP printers?
I would delete all of these and install the printer again as advised on the HP site
