I have a canon ip4500 printer. One of the ink tanks is low so I wanted to go ahead and order each color so I would have extra. I looked on one site and they list

Canon CLI-8BK Compatible Black Inkjet Cartridge Without Chip

and

Black Remanufactured Inkjet Cartridge With Chip for Canon CLI-8BK

Now I know the second one is remanufactured but what is the deal with the chip?

The chips is waht comunicated teh tank levels to the printer. Without it there is a good chance the printer won't except the ink.

Printer makers put chips into printer cartridges that remember the ink level of a cartridge that are empty so that people could not refill the cartridges. Any re-manufactured cartridge has to have that chip reset or even if the cartridge is full the printer will say it is empty. They make all the money off the ink not the printer so they are doing all they can to force people to buy new cartridges.

Most printers have a chip resetter that you can buy to reset the chips at home, cost 5-$20 depending on model. They cannot stop you from refilling or using off brand cartridges nor can they use it to void your warranty. The supreme court decided that a quite a few years ago. The used cartridges have altered chips, the new ones of course don't need it.

If you get the tanks without chips, then you have to transfer the chip from the original Canon tank (instructions should come with the clone tanks). The transfer will allow the tank to work, but the level tracking function will be lost. There are several types of clone tanks out there to replace the 8 series: some use "reset" chips and others use clone chips. In either case, full level sensing function should be retained for at least one tank cycle. I'm not sure if either a "reset" chip or a clone chip is reusable for more than one fill cycle. It would be good to have some feedback from folks who use the exact ones, so you'll know what to expect. The http://www.nifty-stuff.com inkjet forums have lots of info on Canon tank refilling and/or clone tanks.
