Memorex announced new ink jet printable CD-R media available to consumers in U.S. retail stores. Printable discs allow users to print directly on the surface of specially prepared CD-R media using ink jet printers available at retail stores nationwide.

Unlike an ordinary blank disc, a printable disc comes with a porous surface that absorbs printer ink. Using direct printing ink jet printers, consumers can now achieve a professional style disc print on the surface of CD-R discs in just minutes while ensuring full compatibility with all CD and DVD drives or players. Memorex offers CD-R discs that are rated at 48X, and offer 80 minutes of audio record time and 700 MB of data storage.

A 30-pack spindle of Memorex Ink Jet Printable CD-Rs is available at various retail outlets and ememorex.com for a suggested retail price of $14.99. In addition, Memorex has an exclusive partnership with Epson whereby consumers who purchase the Epson Stylus Photo 900 ink jet printer and 30-pack of Memorex Ink Jet Printable CD-Rs through Sept. 1, 2003, are eligible for a $30 mail-in rebate from Epson.

Don't inkjet printers not have a straight paper path? It seems like it'd require a bendable CD-R disc.

Is a 'direct-print' inkjet something special?
