New powersupply making electrical noises.....

Purchased and installed a SilverStone Olympia OP750 powersupply.... but its making an annoying squelching/crackling noise.

The noise is emmitted whenever I do something that draws power.... defrag HD, run SuperPI, open Start menus, etc.

The sound is definitly coming from the powersupply and is electrical in nature.

I've emailed SilverStone support....but hoped for some insight from fellow AT'ers.

🙂

Get it replaced.

It should not do that. You may want to check on jonnyguru.com/forums to see if other users have this power supply.

To make SURE it's the power supply you may want to take it out of the case and sit it as far away from the motherboard as possible and give it a listen.

Sounds like you might be describing coil whine.

Some Seasonic, and Enhance units have had that issue under certain loads particularly lower 12v loads (Enhance is a OEM for Silverstone). My PCP&C Silencer (Seasonic OEM) had that problem until I swapped out my 9500 Pro my x800.

Etasis builds the Zeus series for SS. Enhance builds the Strider and Element series.
No one knows for sure who builds the OP650 or OP750....YET! 🙂

OP..Many OP750s are a-buzz, check the forums at jonnyguru.com

I would replace it. RMA it if you can. When a PSU goes it could take your system with it.

Got ahold of SilverStone... they'll replace it.

I'm looking for a PS that will power an x1950Pro AGP card...12v@30A

Figured this PS was good at 12v@60a....with plenty of PCI-E connectors for the future....

Oh well. 🙁

Might consider the Corsair HX Series CMPSU-620HX .... it has three 18A +12v rails, but I've read people running the x1950pro AGP on it fine and a review indicated the amps share between the rails as needed.....

returning OP750 for full refund. Inside tip that there's a rev2 coming soon that will quieter, especially at higher loads.

For now, I'm picking up that Corsair 620w modular PS. It can privide upto 38A to a single 12v rail and Corsair approves the x1950pro agp card, and PowerColor approves the Corsair 620w with their x1950pro agp card....

thanks for the input guys!
