new pocket pc phone

pretty much have to stay with sprint, unless I want to pay the extra fee for breaking my contract.

i have been looking at the treo 700 through verizon, and my local sprint guy said they will be getting it within the month of June.

I can definately wait that long.

however, they also currently have the ppc-6700 on the website. i have no personal contact with that phone. everyone that I know that has a treo, loves it.

link to ppc-6700

any advice? right now I am leaning towards the tried and true of a treo 700 when it comes out.

thanks

that is my company phone, and it definately sucks as a cellphone, there is really no way to use the phone with one hand, as to dial you have to use the touch screen which is really best used with the stylus. but if you must have a pda and a phone with the emphasis on pda then it will work out well. the ev-do internet works well and is pretty fast, and the phone can be used as a high speed modem for a computer, which is pretty cool.

The PPC-6700 has gotten consistently good reviews, and is probably one of the better PDA phones on the market. It's hard to imagine us CDMA folks getting something nice for once, but it apparently happened. I've played with it a bit in store, and it felt like it had good ergonomics. The slide-out keyboard is great, and really keeps the device from getting too big. My biggest complaint is that it takes only miniSD cards, so that's another $65 to get 2GB of storage (and good luck reading it from your PC!). It also has a camera - that's a show-stopper if you need to work in classified environments, but handy if you're like me and don't feel like hauling around a digital camera for ad-hoc shots.

The Treo 700w doesn't have Wifi built in, and apparently can't use an SDIO card to get it. That's pretty painful. I also think that it's going to be more expensive than the PPC-6700, so that's another issue. I wouldn't bother waiting for it. Reviews on the web have been pretty bad, too...

Both have their pluses and minuses. As long as you have VoiceCommand installed you will be fine with either. There is even a hack that allows you to dial just by pressing the button on your bluetooth headset although that is not yet part of WM5.

I'd suggest you go to pdaphonehome.com for more info on either but in the end it is a matter of choice. I think there are die hard fans on both sides. I support both and know which way I would go but there are plenty of people who would go the other way.

Either way, if you get one, make sure to reset it first thing in the morning. Both require regular resets and if you get into that habbit you may never run into an issue where it occurs at a critical time.

Also if you are with SPrint make sure to call the retention department on a regular basis or look into the SERO plan.

I've been with them for three years and after 3 sucessful calls (probably about 10 unsuccessful where they didn't give me anything) to the retention department over that time I have
1500 anytime anywhere minutes
mobile to mobile free
7PM nights and weekends
100 text messages
$47.50
$10 unlimited data
$4 insurance

I know people have gotten even better deals with corporate discounts but this plan works very well for me. If I could get one of those 20% corporate discounts or they also have some customer loyalty discount as well. Not sure how to get that short of telling them you are leaving 🙂

Forgot to ask - I assumed since you said pocket PC you are referring to the Tree 700w - Right? Not the Treo 700P?

get ppc-6700, but get ms voice command and upgrade to ad2p so you can use your bluetooth headset to talk to the phone as well as listen to music in stereo, if you buy say moto ht820...i have t-mobiel version of mda, i love it excep for the part that google domains have problems and few minor bugs, but i would go to howardforums.com and get all the updates and patches, you will love this if you need somewhat of a lappie replacement, plus i heard evdo is much faster then EDGE and the cpu in 6700 is 400mzh vs 200

good good points to ruminate on. i personally don't care for either the palm or the ppc format. i am more familar with the ppc format, but have access to more palm software (free stuff). so the 700p or 700w are somewhat identical to me (besides the obvious windows / palm difference). correct me if i am wrong.

i will try the retention department, i have been with sprint for 8 or 9 years, hopefully they will give me something for that.

i do not carry my pda with me right now because of the hassle of carrying 2 devices. i know that if it was integrated into the phone, then I would use it more, plus may even be more productive. good stuff to look into. thanks.

i welcome any opinions
