Finally decided to upgrade from my old college tv ... picked up a sammy 5054 last night! :) I'm loving the TV but I realized, all the stuff from my modded xbox+xbmc, dish and upgraded tivo looks horrible on it.

Would moving to component cables help at all or am I just better of getting an xbox360 and htpc? Can't imagine not having my xbmc or my tivo :( And the money it'll cost to move the rest of the stuff to HD. double :(

The Xbox can play HD if it's encoded properly (like in Xvid). Yes, Component cables help. What are you running now? Also, there is an HD TiVo available. You may consider picking up an Xbox 360 and Media Center Expander or whatever it's called, or else just doing a Media Center PC.

Get component cables for the modded xbox and see how you like them. It is a huge improvement.

Man, I got component cables with my XBox when I first bought it. Can't imagine using anything less. I'd definitely try that. Can probably get a set as a GameSpot type place and just return it if you don't notice an improvement.

dont bother with htpc or xbox 360 unless u have a need for both (i do recommend the 360 however ;))
get a component cable for the xbox, it outputs up to 1080i (i use 720p on my sharp Aquos 45" LCD and it looks amazing) your modded xbox/xbmc can upscale most videos for you. the only caveat is it is too slow to play back any true 720p videos.

for xbox i recommend the original xbox component cables, be careful there are two versions, one with optical output and one without. get the optical one if you have a 5.1 setup to output ac3/dolby digital/dts sound

Just DVD's, or all videos in general?

Does it put it up to 720p or 1080i? And is this XBMC 1.0 or 2.0, or does it matter?

ALL video sources. 720p/1080i. 1.x does it, although I don't know how far back. Some interesting reading & links:

hrmm, if xbmc is able to upconvert to 720p or 1080i then I should be okay for awhile. I'll see how well your typical HD ABC or NBC would look. thanks!

Why would you be using standard RCA, or even worse, RF on a plasma? Get some component cables stat son! :p

welcome to High Definition. Please do not use lube because it will hurt. You now will have to pay almost the same price for the TV again in upgrading all your cables, and buying new equipment so that you can enjoy your new HDTV.

The Xbox 360 has the media center extender software built it... you don't have to buy it seperately like you for the xbox 1

I'm fairly sure the Tivo doesn't have component out, although I could be wrong. It's been a while since I've plugged mine in. I think the best you can get is S-Video.
