got myself a Samsung Omnia. its a PDA phone. just got it yesterday. So far i like it.

Only big gripe i have is with verizon. You can't use the GPS unless you get Verizons navigator service and so far i havent found any apps besides the damn apps store they have.

other then that i love the phone. It was $270 with a $70 mail-in-rebate. But then we found out with my wife's work they would giver her a $50 discount on phones and a 15% on acc.

so it was a good deal.

verizon is supposed to release an update that unlocks the gps any day now.

if you need it right now, go here ("leaked" rom). of course if you decide to proceed to do so at your own risk. but another great resource to visit is the modaco forums. they are constantly tweaking, modifying and just generally trying to get the most out of their omnia's. they even have managed to get windows mobile 6.5 on it and last i checked were in the early stages of porting android over. have fun and enjoy the new phone!

yeah i found a thread on madaco forums to unlock it. i was a little bit nervous doing the flash heh.

but now everthing works.

found a neat netlfix app and loaded google maps (wich works great with teh gps).

so far the only issue i have is when you turn the phone. the screen is sopposed to turn with it. it does not always do that.

does verizon charge extra to use the GPS?

if you shut off your data plan, can you still use the GPS?

One big reason why I hate Verizon other than the prices is that they disable stuff on phones.

I just ordered the phone myself! I was with at&t and have an iphone under a corporate contract, but the reception really sucks in parts of NY. Verizon's rock solid everywhere so I took the plunge and got the omnia for free.

Any other tips for the phone? I should have mine early next week.

How's media playback on it? I'm thinking I need a new mp3 player (my iphones a work phone and i'm feeling increasingly uneasy about putting extra-curricular stuff on it), but if the Omnia is 75% of the player that the iphone is then I wouldn't need one.

Many of the things you can re-enable with a cooked rom. Only thing I really dislike is that they gimp some of them spec-wise (I believe the Touch Pro has less ram in it than the sprint version).

Overall though, not too bad.

read the many forums available for them, there are sites with free games, files and such but know what youre downloading. the samsung "today" screen is ok, but there is a built in second version which is pretty darn cool.

http://mobileroar.com/forum/samsung-omnia/ decent info forum

http://danbeahm.blogspot.com/2...omnia-i910-how-to.html good "how-to" starting point

and monaco like someone already posted.

oh, and the number one thing. BACK IT UP.

Are these leaked roms worth it? Sure, I like playing around with stuff and have osx 86 on a netbook but are they stable enough to run on a cellphone? Is wm6.5 significantly faster than the stock os?

Verizon is not rock solid where I live (Bay Area--and specifically my home! :|) so I'm looking to switch back to T-mobile, Sprint, or AT&T. I get some pretty decent discounts through work for all of these providers, so I'm researching phones and cheapo talk+data plan rates.

OP:

does the Omnia have a headphone out (I know, stupid question, but it seems that the G1 Android on T-mobile does not; hence I can't plug it into my car...as I understand it), and is it real web browsing? I.E, can you just go to google maps and do whatever the hell you want?

I was considering this phone, and these are my current requirements. The only issue is Verizon, as I do want to switch. But finding the right phone has been more painful than I imagined.

i havent seen anything about the audio out at all, not sure about that. i use my cd player to play mp3s or else i plug my ipod into the usb and listen that way.

the web is pretty nice on it, but opera doesnt support full flash yet. skyfire does mostly. as for google maps, i use that and mapquest in the browser, and have google maps app installed on it as well. i still like windows live search for a lot of search stuff tho, even tho their maps controls (zoom) really suck sometimes.

Just got my omnia and have mixed thoughts about it, but for your headphone question - there's no 3.5mm jack on it, you need to use a converter (though a nice one is included, it even has a lapel mic on the cord so you can use it as a headset with any headphones)
