New phone around September -- what is the best phone to get?

I currently have Samsung Blackjack II, while I like it, I feel like I need something more interactive. Seems like the best option right now is iPhone 3GS or Palm Pre, will anything better be out by then, or are those two the only two 'best' choices?

I suppose it depends on the network you're willing to go with. There's plenty of amazing GSM phones coming out left and right. An unlocked one would work....

Theres no such thing as a perfect phone. Despite what Apple fanboi's would say. Why dont you tell us what you wanna do with it? I dont understand why you feel the Blackjack 2 is non-interactive. Perhaps a Blackberry or high-end Nokia would be what you need.

Well, I'm finding less and less of what I can do with it, especially lately, its having quite the trouble with even FlexMail 4, (3 was smoother). I think in a way, I'm hitting up against the limit on what this phone can do.

I don't especially want an iPhone, but something that would run programs without too much trouble would be nice. Like iPhone that has an App Store, everything is designed to meet that strict hardware requirements, which (in theory) would mean less problems in general. Right now, WinMo is.. adequate, but somewhat utilitarian. I'm just wanting for a phone that can do more. Though one thing I definitely don't care for in the iPhone is how I will be tied to using iTunes...

Although I owned a 1st Gen iPhone - and bought an iPhone 3G S this afternoon - my second pick after iPhones is either Android or Blackberry. Blackberry for communications, Android for messing around.

From Blackberry, the Blackberry Tour looks very nice. Should be showing up soon.

From the Android side of things, the HTC Magic looks intriguing - T-Mobile is calling it the MyTouch 3G. But the Android phone that looks the most appealing to me is the Samsung i7500 - standard headphones, OLED display, nice camera pretty much everything that I would want. The MyTouch is coming soon, and I have a feeling the i7500 will be out in the Sept./Oct. time-frame... probably on T-Mobile.

I am going to have to say the Omnia II. Until the iphone can multi-task it is a non-starter. The Touch Pro 2 is just a new body over the old guts, it needs more horsepower. The Pre hardware is crap but the software is very nice.

The Omnia II looks awesome, but this one is WinMO still, right? Aside from the 3Gs and Pre, I'd have to say the slew of Android phones that seem to be on their way. The HTC one w/ their customized UI... looks sweet. It just lacks a keyboard which I'm a bit partial to (hence me having a Pre).

Right now, the best phone is probably the iPhone 3GS followed by the Pre. In Sept, who knows. There are a slew of Android phones scheduled to come out this year and IMHO I think Android has way more potential than the iPhone or the Pre. Windows Mobile 6.5 is also coming out which probably won't be a huge game changer but should be a pretty good upgrade from 6.1.

Though with WinMo, I don't like the fact that I'm sort of at the mercy of the manufacturers as to whether they will provide an update for the devices to the latest WinMo, this is constantly happening with the HTC phones I've used as well as the Samsung Blackjack 2, took about 1.5 years for the update to be released.

Why not the HTC Hero? The i7500 seems ok but not too interesting to me so far. Hero though is just wow. Sense UI?

I hadn't heard of the HTC Hero - you are right, it looks really nice. The UI changes look awesome.

TMobile is taking preorders on the MyTouch (aka G2) starting today. I believe its for existing members who renew their contract. they get the phone a few days/week before everyone else; supposedly first week august.

i'm definitely picking that one up and ebaying the samsung memoir

I'm definitely looking forward to the HTC Hero. Rumor is it could come out in November for both Sprint and AT&T take that for what it's worth. Specs are 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen, a 5.0 megapixel camera with auto-focus, WiFi 802.11b/g, 3.5mm headphone jack, Adobe Flash support, Qualcomm MSM7200A 528MHz processor, 512 ROM / 288 RAM, supports Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, dual-band 7.2Mbps, HSPA/WCDMA and 1350 mAh battery, 420 minutes talktime / 750 hours standby (WCDMA).

Dream is the G1. With the G2 coming out, I would look into that or the Hero. I can't comment too much on the G1 though.

I actively compared the iPhone/Pre/Bold and found that the iPhone was unbeatable in terms of price/performance

your opinion may vary

I've been looking around, I think those (the upcoming HTCs and other Andriod-based iphone competitors) are way out of my price range.

My Verizon is up in August (maybe September?) and I was hoping to go back to T-mobile or someone else. At the same time, I am looking for a decent MP3 player for the car (never, ever, purchased or owned one up to this point).

My brother mentioned the ability to hook Pandora into the car using his iPhone, so that got me thinking about a multi-purpose phone to do all of this.

...but with new car payments + insurance + piss-poor salary, I'm thinking I need to be more realistic. May not be able to go the full smart-phone route and just stick with decent mp3 and shitty phone.

...another thing I've discovered is that the glut of phone models absolutely baffles me--on top of the providers' re-badging of general models with new names, I have no idea how you guys keep up with this stuff. I mean, do most of you get a new phone every couple of months? are they that important?

I'm somewhat late to the whole cell phone thing (going on 5 years, now), and so I'm used to my devices lasting me, and doing what I expect it to do (phone calls). I can't imagine replacing a phone within 2 years time. ...I suppose I still remember the time when electronics were expected to last, and not built for disposability; certainly not when these manufacturers price them at $400++

Hoping I can do this with the G1/Dream with T-mobile.

Looks like I'll be picking one up in a week or two (Verizon expires on 9/30).

The price to own/use Iphone = poop in comparison.
