I really don't like my current phone (Galaxy S Blaze) its slow and the screen seems pretty small to me. I want a phone around the $300 price point. It also has to be powerful and has to off contract because my contract doesn't end until October. I would prefer a screen around 5 inches. I just want it so that I can have a decent phone until some of the newer ones come out. Some phones that I was considering were the BLU Life Pure, and the Alcatel One Touch Idol X+. Please give some suggestions.

Yep, the Nexus 5 and the Moto X (on sale Jan. 27 for $300 unlocked) are the best phones for the money. What carrier are you on?

The 32gb model, with this sale, would be $350, as opposed to $450. (Developer Edition phones are also included)

Now, one concession would be screen size. It is a 4.7" screen, and with no physical/touch buttons (they are drawn on-screen at the bottom, the standard Google approach), so the apparent screen size can sometimes be smaller. Usually they do disappear when watching videos, so it's not always not utilizing the full display size.

I fear that it may seem I push this phone a lot on this forum, but over the phones I've utilized in the past, considering what I personally want in a phone, this trumps them all. It's just so... right.
It's responsiveness and utility are impressive, and definitely a few steps above what the specs would otherwise suggest.

If you don't need 32GB and can handle 16GB, and can drop in screen size a tiny amount, I think this is probably the best possible device you could get at that price off-contract.
And it truly does keep toe-to-toe in most ways with the flagship phones that cost more. This is Motorola's flagship for this generation of their phones. I wouldn't doubt if in the summer they announce a phone that runs laps around this one, but it will also cost more. They want the flagship phone price but found out people care very highly about specs. That said, I wouldn't have paid $600+ for this phone, no way. I did get it at $400 though. :)

Anything with a Mediatek cpu is trash.
Not sure why you would consider that phone when you can get a Nexus 5 for the same price.

FYI, it doesn't even have LTE and I don't think even supports T-mobile 3G bands. You would be stuck using 2G service on the Blu life pure.

For $300, you can do way better than the BluLife or Alcatel. The Nexus 5 and MotoX should be the only two devices you're considering new at that price point. If you want to go cheaper, I would still take the MotoG over those two crappier phones, even without LTE. TMo's HSPA+ should be more than sufficient.

the screen area loss to the on-screen buttons would be a big deal to me if I wanted to keep my phone un-rooted, but if you can root your phone it is an easy problem to solve by shrinking or auto-hiding the navigation bar.

Well the N5 is really 350, and Tax will add another 30 dollars whether you do N5 or MotoX....but I'd just save up that extra and get one of those phones.
With the google line of phones playing in the 300-400 dollar space, I have no idea why anyone would consider a Chinese brand phone for the same cost. Even all else equal, Google phones sell a LOT and you'll have a strong developer community around it if you are interested in that. Not sure if we can say that for the random Chinese Brand.

Are you against buying used? A S3 or a note 2 would hold you over quite nicely for a while. I have no urge to upgrade from my note 2

man would i so like to get that phone but the AMOLED is a dealbreaker. i like to use my phone on my bike when i pedal in the city to show me the route when i want to explore new stuff. AMOLED is unusable in those scenarios.

Sigh.

the Nexus 5 will be enjoyable enough.

I would definitely get the Moto X for $299 tomorrow + tax(shipping is free).
Around $320 vs $382 for the Nexus 5.

Have you tried one in a brick-and-mortar yet? It might actually work for you - the Moto X can get pretty bright for and OLED. In terms of daylight usability it's leagues better than 2011 panels.

i guess so I'll just have to save a little more and get a MOTO X or Nexus 5

You said $300, so Moto X fits the price range.

If you don't have 300, I believe the special on Monday is for a coupon voucher that you can redeem later on. You just have to register to get it. I don't think you have to pay anything on Monday. I would get the voucher in case you are considering the Moto X and then you can buy it later on when you decide to.
