Building a PC with a 3.0e is probably the worst electronics purchase decision I've made to date. Unfortunately, I can't justify going out and building a new system since the performance is more than enough for what I do.

i have a 'server' that has a 865 GBH (i think) Intel branded mobo (i am working off memory since i can't get to the box...)... it's know it's a 1.8 socket 478 platform... it's dual channel DDR and has sata, if that helps validate my recollection of the chipset...

i don't remember seeing any options in the bios to mess with settings, would this cpu work? i think the fsb on the 1.8 is lower... i'm just not up on the intel offerings!

They sure do. Lots. It's confusing in the world of Intel sockets. Why did they even make s775 if they were going to keep s478?

And that's limited to Intel how?

When you compare this deal with the newly priced dual core P4 2.66GHz, 533MHz FSB, 65mm, Socket 775 CPUs going for around $119 this is not such a hot deal anymore.

Indeed....BUT....it's a good upgrade CPU for people with S478 mobo's.

There are some cheep ones but not all support dual channel ram and such so you are probably be looking at 50 bucks for one with any performance options at all, I would think.

Yeah, i was actually hoping for maybe something along the lines of bare bones cheap used refurbed for like 20-30 bucks. I remember back then they tested a newer via chipset single channel against the intel dual channel chipsets and the VIA one was trading victories with the intel one, so I'm sure the single channel wont' affect perf that much especially during normal usage.

2.8E won't get you any performance boost over say a 2.8C until you hit the 3.6-4.0ghz range.
