i was wondering if it was a joint design with tokina (which pentax now shares a parent company with in addition to their historic relationship) but the guys on dpreview seem to think it's a rebadged tamron. though tamron already sells the lens in k mount, so i have to wonder what pentax will be doing to it (smc i suppose)?

Tamron sells a Sony/Minolta mount version too and the "Sony" 18-250 lens is a rebadged Tamron as well.

I'm betting that both Sony and Pentax do what Minolta did with their 28-75 f/2.8 and cherry-pick the best examples for re-badging. Supposedly the 28-75 f/2.8 Minolta and Tamron are the same lens optically, but the Tamron version can be hit-or-miss with front-focus issues while I don't know anyone who has had problems with the Minolta-branded version.

K, so I'm a super-n00b to SLR photography, what would a lens like that 18-250 cost? My fam's taking a vacation to San Diego in December and this would be a great thing for me to have instead of my current couple of lenses...

skeptical - for a long time the DA* were hard to get - and IIRC one of them is still always on back order and hard to get. So i'm curious to how they expect to even have the capacity just to rebadge lenses.

its nice to see how primes are pretty well represented in both current and future lens line ups (although I would LOVE to see a 60-65mm and a 90mm prime), but Pentax really needs to get its whole supply chain in order and ensure adequate supply.

and i wouldn't be suprised to see the 645 either removed later on, or simply a mistake at this point...hard to release a lens when you put the body on the back burner

and while i'm not in the market for one, nor would I be a target for a 1000+ lens, they should really consider a 200m f/2 or faster, or a 300mm f/2.8

either way always very interesting =) if the 18-250 is indeed higher optical quality rebadged tamrons, and the quality is indeed better than the 50-200 and 18-55, I may sell those two and move to the 18-250. but considering the scale of zoom on such a lens I can't expect stellar image quality...

they don't make it in k mount, as it's a pentax design and i'm pretty certain pentax isn't going to let a 3rd party (well, now it's an affiliate) to sell it's own lenses to its own users.

doesn't look like that lens is actually around for canon or nikon yet.

whoa, it just appeared on adorama while i was looking

Right you are. I assumed that since Tokina and Pentax are affiliated that one of them would produce that lens for the k mount. Stupid assumption on my part but possibly a more stupid business move not selling it for the k mount.

well, it's *supposed* to be released by pentax for k mount any day now. i'd be shocked if it wasn't out for xmas.

the 50-135 was out for canikon from tokina before it was for pentax by several weeks, iirc.

At least as far as the 11-18, 17-35, 28-75 & 18-200 are concerned there are differences (& more than just the coatings) between the KM & Tamrons with the KM version usually showing improvement on an already good performance.
How different the Sony 18-250 is to the Tamron 18-250 I don't yet know.
