I'm just finishing ordering my new and first computer system that I will build. The last thing I need to do now is figure out what operating system I'm going to use and I have managed it down to XP and Windows 2000. Now, I'm a home user, which would probably bode well for XP, but with this being the first PC I have ever put together, I want it to go as smoothly as possible, and it sounds like I would have more luck with 2K. Please let me know what you think and why so. Also, is 2K any good for games, or strictly business. Thanks and oh yeah, price on the OS's don't matter.

I think you need to give us more idea of what you're putting into your system and what you're going to use it for.

Bottom line, WinXP and Win2K aren't a whole lot different. XP does do certain things faster (browse, open, etc) and should be compatible with a bit more stuff. I used Win2K solidly since it came out. My uptimes were long and problems scarce, also it was just fine for gaming/everyday use.

with win2k you're going to want to know a few things first about permissions and networking, 'cause it can make life easier.
with XP you can either have it all advanced, or dumbed down.

other than the fact that you're going to want to do alot of tweaking with XP once you get it. (remove messenger, a couple of registry hacks, etc) I'd recommend XP Pro. It's got everything Win2K does and will be more supported in the future.
