I am thinking of buying a pc with an i7 920.
Uses: Mainly programming, software development (internet applications using java fx, java me, java ee) using Netbeans, eclipse. Also would be using Apache Tomcat in near future.
I currently have intel pentium d, 2.66GHz. Netbeans works very slow. Thats why i need something fast. That's y i thought i7 wud be good.

i wud not be playing games much. But i want zippy performance in the above tasks.

Donno much abt motherboard and other components. Please help me build?
I reside in Delhi.
Thanks

Would you mind answering these questions first?

PLEASE when you POST threads asking for input on system builds tell us...

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

Answers are in order:
Tasks used: Software development in Java using ide such as Eclipse, Netbeans, plus graphics work(not too hardcore) for websites and applications.
Multitasking:antivirus in the background, atleast 4-5 applications running(web browser, word, music, and of course one or more of above applications)
Also should be wifi enabled( have one more sys at home, in a different room, which has internet connection plus two laptops as well).
Budget: Rs 40,000-45000($900-950)
Country: Will be buying from India
Brand Preferences:
Processor:eek:nly intel!
That's the only thing. For other components, you suggest.
Current Parts: No, its to be built from scratch
Searched Previous Threads: Yes. But most of them are concerned with building a gaming pc. I am not. Its more of a development station fast enough for 4-5 years.
No overclocking. Dunno what it is!
Screen resolution:1024X768
Build time: Within two months

nothing you've indicated requires anything powerful.

afaik, java is a compile at runtime language, so you don't even benefit on compile times with a faster processor.

your main performance upgrade for your use will be an SSD. everything else is unimportant. go with integrated graphics, and a mid-range dual to quadcore of either amd or intel. (not sure why you specifically want intel, but okay.) i3 or so. even i5 is overkill, but if you're deadset on it, whatever. i7 is just silly for your use.

imo, you'd be best off going with one of the cheapo laptops based around the i3 or pentium 6000, and replacing the hdd with an ssd.

All right then maybe i5 750?
And what about the board? anything will do?
How much SSD would cost me? (250 gb)
@fayd: Would an i5 laptop do my job? i have looked at dell inspiron 14R and even studio with i5. but i5's for laptop is slower than i5 for desktops, right?

250 gb SSD would take up the bulk of your budget. i'd recommend you stick to 120-128 gb.

i5 for laptop is slower than i5 for desktop. but everything is so vastly better than what you have now.

tmk, i5-750 doesn't have an integrated graphics core. i think i5-660 is the most powerful intel processor that does have the graphics core on chip. can someone else confirm?

That's not exactly true. Java source code gets compiled to Java bytecode, so you do need some processor power to do that, depending on how big your project is.

Also, I wouldn't recommend an SSD unless you're talking about a laptop/notebook. Development projects tend to take a significant amount of space. A mainstream 7200RPM hard drive of at least 500GB would be best to stay under the budget.

Yup. But its not a good value at all.

OP should look into AMD too IMO.

I would do something like:
i5 750
$120 P55 mobo like the GA-P55A-UD3
4GB of DDR3 1333
Any old GPU (maybe Nvidia if you decide to do some Linux development)
1TB SSD
DVD Burner
Quality 400W Antec or Corsair PSU
Decent case

If you could fit it into the budget, an SSD will make your project builds absolutely fly because compiling involves reading and writing a bunch of little files. This happens to be what SSDs excel at.
