New PC-Spec help please...

After much deliberation I seem to be heading towards a complete rebuild rather than the partial upgrade I was thinking of. I'm still aving doubts, b'cos of the cost, and wondering if the time is right. Please let me know what you think.
New system to include:-

Intel Core 2 DUO E6700 2.67GHz 'Conroe' 4Mb Cache LGA775 606793 Corsair Twin2X 2GB DDR2 (2x1024MB) XMS2 9136C5
Tagan TG900-U95 900W ATX2.01 Turbojet Quad SLi Compliant
eVGA 122-CK-NF68 nForce 680i SLI (Socket 775) DDR2 Motherboard
2x BFG nVidia GeForce 8800GTX 768MB DDR3 Dual DVI/TV Out (PCI-E)

If this is a good time to go for this lot, do I really need 2 of those 8800's or would 1 be enough? Games most played are Medieval2, F.E.A.R., Oblivion, Dark Messiah, COD2, Doom3 etc.

Also better get the tape messure out for those cards, to see if I need a new case or not...

Thanks
Mark

get a PCPC PSU instead of that tagan PSU.. just because it is made by seasonic and is always built like tanks with high quality parts. i'd also get evga over bfg for aesthetic reasons and warranty restrictions. what monitor do u have that u need 8800gtx to play those games?

Thanks for the advice Louis.
I didn't really consider the monitor, but I may go for an LCD widescreen after all. I chose that card for the DX10 ability tbh. I've checked the prices on the evga card and it's about £50 more than the BGF. Is it worth it? and what monitor would you suggest for this spec?

I would also suggest a better PSU. To use the 8800GTX fully, you need atleast a 24" monitor or get a nice 1080P 30+ inch LCD TV. Also, I dont think there is any real need to have the 8800 in SLI. You won't really see too much improvement over a single card in those games. You're probably better off getting one and then waiting till you actually need another one.

The Dell 2407 is pretty nice plus you can pick one up in the forums for $550-600 shipped usually (probably not for you though 🙁). If you have budget for it and depending on what is available in UK, try to get a 37" or so 1080P LCD. Can't say which one as I have no idea on availability and price for you.

I would run only 1 8800GTX , if I I remember well I was able to play Halflife2 on my dell 2405FPW (1920x1200) with filters fairly good (with an Athlon64 3500+ and a X800XT). But then again I'm not up-to-date with the latest games.
As for the monitor, I give 2 thumbs up to my Dell monitor. It's exellent.

yea i agree with single 8800gtx and 2407 monitor, if you're going 8800gtx sli i'd go with the dell/apple/hp 30" for $1500+

Even the Dell 30" can be had for about $1200 in the US. But you can get a bigger LCD TV for cheaper. You have to see if you need the massive resolution of the 30" LCD or the size from a TV in the same price range. It all depends on your budget.

I don't see my self gaming in larger then 24".. 30" is huge, anything more is too much, I find.
And for his needs (Gamer) I would go for no bigger then 24" LCD or if he wants and have the budget then the 30" Dell. The LCD TVs in this price range have the 1366x768HDTV res which is not ideal for gaming and the 8800GTX can't post that resolution, only the near 1280x768.

In other words, for gaming I say forget using a HDTV LCD.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm gonna hold off on the new rig and just get a monitor for now. Ws looking at BenQ FP241W 24". I think I'm gonna wait for RD600 chipset and DDR3 before upgrade.
