New PC; Motherboard doesn't properly recognize processor

I checked the motherboard's website to see if there was a newer version of the BIOS available, but my motherboard already has the current version. I have an Athlon 2500+ that comes up as 1100 mhz during POST, when it should say Athlon 2500+. My motherboard uses the Phoenix BIOS, and I tried to see if I could find a way to manually set it to 1.87, but couldn't.

Any idea how I can fix this?

Also the 2500 has 333 mhz FSB, and I have PC3200 RAM. But when I start up the PC, it says the FSB clock speed (or something to that effect) is 200. How do I fix this as well?

On some mobos there is a switch or jumper that needs to be moved from 100 in order to read the right FSB. Check your mobo manual.

Is the FSB set to 100? It should be 166.

It used to say 400, and now it says 200.

And I checked the manual, I can't find instructions on how to do this. I was hoping for someone who has had a similar experience to help me out.

What motherboard you got, TylerD? I can probably help.

Sounds like the FSB is set wrong. When you say it used to say 400, and now it says 200, that implies your are reading the memory speed as the FSB IMO. Is it a retail or OEM desktop 2500+, or a mobile chip?

Yup, most likely. This CPU has a 166MHz double pumped FSB, which translates to an effective 333MHz. What motherboard are you using?

Yeah, the AN35N-Ultra doesn't usually pick up on the FSB speed right.. You need to manually set the FSB to 166mhz, and set the memory to run 100% of the FSB...or 1:1.

Edit:

In the bios...go to the Advanced Chipset Features Menu....and set the following...

FSB Frequency - "166 mhz"
Memory Frequency - "100%"

Hit F10 and enter....voilla.

🙂

Ok, you will want to enter the motherboard's BIOS menu and make two changes:

  • Go to Advanced Chipset Features and set the FSB Frequency to 166 MHz.
  • Also change Memory Frequency to 100% so the memory runs sync'ed to the CPU's bus speed for optimal performance
Now hit ESC to exit the Advanced Chipset Features, hit F10 to do a Save & Exit, and your 2500+ should run at its proper 11.0 x 166MHz.

Note that this will result in the memory running at 166MHz or DDR333. Get over the fact that it is running below its rated speed, because if you run the memory out-of-sync with the CPU's bus, you lose performance even though the memory is running faster. Sync = good 🙂

I win!!! Mech was slower, but his post is fancier. 🙁

😉

Just an FYI, in the newer Award bioses, there is no need to exit out of the sub menus before hitting F10...either way it will work though. 🙂

Ok, thanks a million, Mech.

I used your guide to build my PC, btw. 😉

EDIT: Also, should my processor come up as an Athlon 2500+ after I do this?
Awesome to hear that, I hope it was helpful 🙂 Nice choice of boards, it's a great value and it can overclock pretty good too. 🙂 I have one myself down at work doing some little file-serving stuff.

Yes, but I'm not Mech, so I'll let him tell you. 😛
Hehe... yes it should be showing at the POST screen as an AthlonXP 2500+, rather than being shown in terms of MHz, when it is set to those settings that both of us 😉 mentioned.

Hehe! I was ribbing on ya...mech and I were having a little behind the scenes contest. 🙂 Glad to hear we could all help. I just setup a couple of those boards recently with 2600+ Retails, and it did the same thing.

Enjoy the system, and if you need any other help, feel free to PM mech or I. 🙂
