Alright. This is my first post here on the forums ^_^

Im setting up a new PC for my dad, and I want to make a really fast one for him, as he want to use it for hobby Video/music editing.

Are there anything you would like to change/add ?

If i should use a SSD for his Win7 OS, wich one should i pick (no disk he needs to do TRIM or whatever that is) (i think the storage should be low, as the higher ones are really expensive)

A must is a mainboard with Firewire.

Dont know about the antec 300 case, i just picked it as its the most cheap in my country and i see it has alot of good reviews.

The PSU, i just picked one of a known brand.

The RAM , i really have no clue about.

The monitor i chose because its really cheap, and hes not sitting infront of the PC so much. I guessed it would be sufficient ?

I was thinking about dropping the GTX 460 GPU for a cheaper one, so i could add some more on the SSD, or other components. But wich GFX card is really cheap and "good enough".

This PC will not be used for much gaming.

I hope some of you guys have any input for me, so that i can go ahead and order it :awe:

Anyway, here are the parts ive come up with:

Intel I7 930

I would strongly advise getting rid of the GTX 460 since, like you say, the machine will not be doing much gaming. Something simple like a GT 240 or 5450 will be perfect for him.

You might also want to consider going down to a i7 750/760/860/870 build with a ASUS P7P55D-E and 8GB of DDR3 1333. That should be about the same cost as your 930 build, and the higher turbos and more RAM will make a difference for video editing.

As for SSD, anything Sandforce-based (Corsair Force, OCZ Vertex 2, OCZ Agility 2) will be very resilient.

Alright. the gt460 is overkill =))

I actually thought of such a build youre talking about.
That hyper threading that comes with i7 860 and higher, that helps alot right ?
so, 6gb in tripple channel will not beat 8gb 1333 in a socket 1156 ?

Hyperthreading is really application-dependent. It helps some and actually hurts others. (At work, we turn HT off on all our Nehalems because it's a ~5% hit on our most common workloads).

No, 6GB in a triple-channel setup will not "beat" 8GB in a dual-channel setup for any meaningful comparison. If you're swapping, that marginally faster memory ain't doing you a whole lot of good. :awe:

mfenn: win7 makes use of the HT ?

Jaydee. my budget are about what i posted there + some ekstra if it really helps me.
Thanks for the tip on that tower, but im in Norway and will buy from Norwegian stores, as the import tax makes it not worth it, DOA etc..

I just linked components from Newegg as its a page i look at reviews on, and is in english =))

Also, i would want to set up this PC in a raid, so when my dads PC crashes, i have a backup disk. Im gonna read up abit on raid, but is it possible to take 2x1TB spinpoint disks with 2 partitions (1 system, 1 saving space) in raid (clone), and if one of them fails, just unraid and use 1 disk ?
