I built a new pc just a few days ago. When I went to play a game, lets say DAOC, my game would freeze completely or restart the whole computer. And when I would try 3dmark it would always give me a error message after the 3 fps test. ANyone know why my PC would keep freezing when playing a game?
Specs are: 320 mg hd
windows xp sp2
8800gts
Asus p5n-e SLI
Intel C2d 6320

And when playing a game it would completely close the game and give me a windows error message. Is it a windows problem or something wrong with my parts?

could be both. It would help if you could supply the exact error message. Or at least the file that is casuing it (if its BSOD). It could be anything, but it sounds like your graphics card. Find out what is erroring out. Most likely uninstalling and installing all drivers, for everything would fix minor problems, but it could be more serious.

I don't really get the BOSD. The game would freeze and since i have the reboot if system fails on, my pc will just restart.

Sounds like either a graphics or Sound problem
that's the only thing that affects all games like that. try reinstalling drivers and if that doesn't work then one of those is not working properly.

Graphics card overheating? Run a game with the side of the case off and make sure the fan on your graphics card is spinning. Make sure they're all spinning, actually. Use the nVidia's nTune utility to check the temperature of the card.

All the fans were spinning, the GPU was at 56-59c when i was running the stability test from uTune. But the thing froze on me 3 minutes into the test.

With an 8800 series video card, i'm guessing possibly power supply? You failed to mention what power supply you are using.

Give us some specs on it....brand/model?

Hi Red Beard,

Have you found a solution to this problem? I recently bought a new video card and have been having the same problem - games will freeze after around 20 mins (most games anyway, Halo 2 is worst)... Sometimes it'll even freeze when left on overnight etc. It must be a driver issue because this problem seems to be rife on the net!

My specs:

Gigabyte 965G-DS3 (rev 1.0)
Core 2 Duo e6700
4gb Super Talent DDR2-800 Ram (4x1gb)
Samsung 500g SATA-II HDD
CoolerMaster eXtreme Power 550W
BFG 8800GTX OC2 768mb

(I haven't overclocked anything)

Would be great to hear from someone who managed to resolve this issue. I've been speaking to the guys at BFG and they wanted me to suss out the PSU as well - everything seems fine. Voltage etc is A-OK and it's more than enough to run everything.

It's driving me insane! All this money on a great rig, and I can't use it!

Thanks to anyone with constructive feedback...

Dylan
