New PC Decisions

Perhaps it seems like an easy decision, but I am having trouble deciding between a laptop and a desktop PC. Obviously the desktop is a better bang-for-the-buck system, and significantly easier/cheaper to upgrade. The problem is, I may be moving overseas in 2 years when I go to graduate school. In that case I could take the laptop with me relatively easily. The downside of course is the laptop GPU cannot be upgraded and I do intend to use my PC for gaming. At the moment I am leaning towards a desktop PC.

So the question really boils down to, how difficult/expensive/risky is it to transport a desktop PC overseas? Also, is there any reason new barebone laptops would not be available in 2-3 years time? I was thinking I could possibly transfer the hardware to a new barebones to make upgrading a bit less pricey, if I went the laptop route. Of course that assumes the laptop chipset would be compatible with Merom processors, etc. A third alternative would be to buy an inexpensive budget laptop in 2 years for taking to graduate school, though this would not necessarily be ideal. Thoughts or advice appreciated.

Well, you have the pros and cons down so its really up to you - However, few parts from a desktop will work in a laptop and vise versa. I would get a desktop and game on it. In 2 years you could sell it or ship it. For shipping - are you shipping anything else? If not I would say sell it and use the money to help buy a laptop

if you game a lot and like all the eye candy at high resolution, you'll want to get a new desktop in 2 years time anyway... so, get one now and IF you move in 2 years, sell it and get a new one wherever the hell it is that you end up.

As for the parts, I meant the parts from the first laptop. And I would not be shipping anything other than the PC, no.

Thanks for the replies so far. Perhaps I am thinking a bit too far ahead.

Buy a cheap laptop (>$200) for typing on, i recommend a thinkpad X24, and spend the rest of your budget on a nice desktop.
