New pc config! Please comment..anything

15 y/o...just sold the comp. i built last year for 800(dont know how...) need a new one and my summer jobs almost over and ill have the money. I will be gaming mostly. Not much encoding and what not. This is what i have so far for basic parts


Raptors 74gb x2
1gig OCZ (512x2) ddr.3500
Asus K8V Deluxe mobo
A64 3400+ proc.
probably x800pro

ok i dont need a sound card or speakers cause i use a headset when play and for music stock speakers with my moniter is fine. im not worried at all about overclocking becuase i dont know how and prolly never will. ill have lots of media on this pc so thats why i wanted 2 raptors....If u need any other reference as to my decision please PLEASE ask. Any ANY comments welcomed. Im good with constructive critisizm. thanx in advance to u all
 
Looks good, add a good case/psu and you're good to go. I recommend a Chenming Aluminum case with a enermax 350 or 450

I agree. Nice specs on the rig, but it's all worthless unless you have a quality powersupply and a case w/good ventilation. Don't waste money on the Alienware-looking case w/the LED Fans. Go for a nice, simple Antec case which always has great airflow properties. 🙂 Good luck.

Make sure you get the SE version of that motherboard.

Are 2 Raptors going to be big enough for all your media? Maybe a couple of larger drives in RAID would be better...

Nah, seriously though, that looks like a killer rig.

If you aren't OCing at all, you don't really need the PC3500 RAM, as it will have to run lower than it's rated speed just to match your CPU's FSB.

If you do plan to OC even a little, don't get that mobo, as it doesn't have an AGP lock & won't do well.

Maybe the MSI K8N Neo Platinum nForce 3 mobo instead. If you are interested in OCing at all...then that PC3500 RAM will be good.

Socket 754 doesn't support dual channel.

939 does, but it is a lot more expensive at the moment.
 
my uncle may be giving me 2 sticks of dual channel. Will it still work(not as in dual channel format of course)?

It will still work quite well.

Dual channel isn't known to make much of a difference in performance on AMD systems yet anyway.

What opticals (DVD RW or CDRW) are you gonna use?
 
Dual channel memory doesn't affect amds that much so it's nothing to be missed. Memory isn't dual channel. Any memory can be used as single channel. Inorder to use it as dual channel however it's best the two chips be as similar as possible.
 
Are you sure about the 2 raptors? You are probably better of with 1 raptor, and then put that extra money to a 120-200 gig HDD (and you'll prolly still have some cash left over...aren't the 74gig raptors around 170ish?) if you need storage.

And just to echo the others...if you wo'nt overlock no need for anything faster than pc3200


And you do need a soundcard...else what would you plug your headphones into 😉 (haha yeah i know it comes with onboard sound anyways, but you make it sound like no audio plugins are needed 😛 )
 
How much money do you have?
Seems like a lot, so I'd get something like this:
CPU: A64 3000+, 3200+ 2.2GHz 512KB, or 3400+ 2.4GHz 512K /if they have it/
If you're not overclocking, there's little point to getting a 1MB cache processor, as it's only 0-5% faster than one with 512KB, and is outperformed by an extra 200MHz pretty much always. I saw the 3200+ 2.2GHz 512K at newegg, so you can get that. The 3400+ 2.4GHz 512K would be your best option, but I haven't seen it anywhere - and the 1MB 2.2GHz version isn't worth it, as it's barely faster than the aforementioned 3200+. Without overclocking, I'd say the stock HSF is good enough, so get a retail version.
MB: MSI K8N Neo Platinum. It's the best currently out there, period.
RAM: 2x512MB PC3200. You can go with something generic or value select to save money, or get the Corsair 3200XL if you want the fastest, though it's only by 1-2%.
VGA: X800XT, 6800GT, or X800 Pro, in that order, whichever you can actually buy.
HDD: You mention you have "lots of media". If by that you mean music and movies, you /will not/ see an improvement using a Raptor. Raptors are only worth it for OS, programs, and games - for which only one should be enough. Otherwise get two 120-160GBs in a RAID, or alternately the Seagate 200GB uses 100GB platters (the rest have 80GBs), which means it should be somewhat faster.
PSU: something 400-500W from Antec, Forton, Sparkle, ...
Case: This is pretty much personal preference. Myself, I like the Lian-Li PC-V1000, Antec P160, and Silverstone TJ04 Gloria. The Coolermaster Praetorian looks nice as well.

I would just go for a 120GB maxtor or seagate. The raptors maybe are a little bit faster, but i doubt it would be noticable, and they cost alot more.

the RAID thing is just a waste of money. there are lots of articles and test showing that a RAID config in a desktop environment yields only minimal performance gain while costing twiceas much.

so, save some money on the overprized raptors and the useless raid, and maybe spend it on a really good case. i would recommend one of the antec models. they are awesome.
 
I would still recommend going with one Raptor. But for the price of that second Raptor, you can get a 250 GB drive or a couple smaller ones for more storage if that's what you need.
 
Just got home from work....i hate my job....anyways my boss gave me a compaq for some wierd reason(i think he likes me as an employe, but i just sent in a two weeks notice of me quiting two hours later) It included a celeron some pc2100 and a western digital 80gig HD w/ 8mb cache. I think it was an after market HD but hey its now mine so who cares. So how does this sound.....one raptor w/ my 80gig? Or i was thinkin i could just go ahead with the 2 raptors and have the 80 gig with it(3 HDs) but then again price>performance....but then again...i have a fairly large price range---> i can go with one raptor(games), one 200+gig(media), and the 80gig(other shatnick i might need)....

i hear lots of problems about if u have different hard drives and use raid 0 u will have difficulties. Is this true? and what kind of difficulties?
