Hello everyone,

So on Black Friday I went shopping at Canada Computers for my first ever Pc build. I am mainly building this PC for HD gaming (csgo, witcher 3, BattleFront, Fallout 4) and maybe some video editing.

i7-4790k
msi z97s SLI krait edition
cooler master hyper 212 evo (maybe i should go liquid for overclocking?)
g.skill ripjaws dd3 2133
samsung 850 ssd 250gb
1TB HHD
evga supernova 750
fractal design r2 full tower (this guy is HUGE)

As you can see, I haven't purchased a GPU yet because I am unsure of what to get. I am thinking of getting the gtx 970/980 but do I need it? Do you see anything wrong with the components that I've purchase? Another reason why i haven't put 'em together is that im contemplating whether I should return everything and do a Skylake build. :hmm:

Everything I bought have cost me $1200CD. I know if i do 6700k build it will cost more.

Your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

the 4790K CPU is AWESOME. you will not regret buying it.

yes, you do need a GPU. now, generally, a 970 is a ton of power, and most people do not need anything else. 980 is cool but, not kidding, unless you have some really big monitor, or more than 1 screen, you don't need it.
(i play fallout 4 on a 4670k cpu and a 770 gpu, my gpu is not even overclocked, and the game auto-set everything to ULTRA.)

the 212 evo is more than enough. trust me because i have a liquid cooler and it's not better than a 212.

with the build you have, either a 970 or 390 will do great.
why the full tower tho? would not you have been better with a fractal r4 or r5 ?

Also on many game benchmarks, the skylake cpu doesnt really do better than the 4790 or 4770, pretty even.

Screen resolution will be what dictates what GPU you really need. If you are just doing 1080p a 970 is more than enough. I would even debate just getting a cheap hold-over GPU (i.e. something from last generation if you can find it cheap or even used). The new GPUs are coming out within the next 6 months are set to be 100% or more faster than the existing GPUs due to the major jump in manufacturing process nodes (from 28nm to 14-16nm), allowing for higher clock speeds, almost double the amount of transistors, and cooler operating temperatures. It is a MAJOR upgrade to GPU technology, the likes of which that hasn't been seen for about 5-6 years.

As mentioned, if you tell us the resolution of your screen, and the games you are going to be playing, we can give you a good recommendation here.

But I will say you can't go wrong with a 970.

My monitor right now only goes up to 1080p, but i am also thinking of upgrading this in the future.

Update, so i've completed my build. Windows 7 64 bit. Everything went smoothly, i've installed my old GPU for the time being (Asus gtx 550 ti) waiting for boxing day to find a good deal.

Im using my New Build as I type this. But I'm having trouble with audio. Right now I have no sound at all. on my system tray, the volume icon has a red x on it. If I hover my cursor on it, it says "No audio output is installed". I've gone thorugh BIOS and check if my on-board audio is enabled and it is. I've check Programs and it does say that RealTek High Definition Driver is installed. I've double check inside the PC if it is connected and it is. I've looked around but couldn't find a solution. :'(

sry, i think i got confused there, when i was talking about connected inside the PC, i was talking about the jack in front of the case. which has nothing to do with the issue.. or does it? D:

LOL, im sorry guys. I got it working, I went to msi site and downloaded the chipset and restarted. The red x mark was still on the system tray but when i clicked on it, instead of it saying there is no audio output dectected, it told me to plug in speaker or headphones and I did. Then VOILA!! I was able to listen to duran duran Ordinary day!

such an idiot
