Well I successfully built my first PC and installed XP Pro without any problems. I thought everything would be smooth sailing from here, but now I have hit some problems. Many programs refuse to install!

The first things I did with my PC was install SP2, AVG Free, and Norton Internet Securty all off a CDs. I then connected to the internet, and did Windows Update. Now I am trying to install all my programs and update my drivers.

It seems like anything that uses InstallShield does not work. I get the splash screen 'Install Shield Wizard Starting...' and it just never launches. I cannot even update my motherboard BIOS because the update program needs this.

Many other programs are not working either:

-Firefox get stuck at the 'Installing...' phase
-The cd for my Samsung 204b LCD monitor autoplay, but then gets stuck at a black screen.
-Creative Audigy2 CD will not autoplay, and will not run when I manually execute it.

But some programs installed with no issues at all, like AVG and Norton. I have done some searches, and I can't find any help. If you have any ideas, please help me out. Thanks.

System:
Core2Duo E6600
Gigabyte DS3 with F3 BIOS
NEC DVDRW with latest firmware
Seageate Barracuda 7200.10 250 GB
7900 GT OC
2 GB Corsair XMS

Edit: One thing that disturbs me...The overall Windows performance does not seem any faster than my old P4 3ghz with 1GB RAM. Wndows still takes the same time to load, things don't seem to be installing or launching faster, ect. I was under the assumption that my E6600 would be blowing me away. I hope this problem is related to me installation problems..

Are you telling us that you're running both AVG & Norton AV?

You cannot have two AV programs installed.

Yes you can. I have ran AVG and FreeAV simultaneously just for kicks on a new build.

Antiviruses have been known to conflict with InstallShield.

Worse comes to worst, you can update your BIOS if you have a floppy or USB key. But anyway, can you see if there are any pertinent errors or warnings logged in the NT Event Viewer for the system/application (security I suppose too) sections? It's under Control Panel->Administrative Tools.

Heck, first of all does your PC past memtest86? A new CPU won't make Windows "seem" much faster. The CPU bottleneck for subtle usage was probably eliminated at 2.4 GHz P4 or so. Get faster I/O devices (like the hard drive) and you will notice it. Even if it can complete a cycle faster or do more instructions per cycle, it doesn't matter if it's waiting on I/O or IRQs.

Running two AVs at once is a bad idea. Too many shell hooks and your PC will be sluggish. And one will pick up viruses in the other's quarantine area.
