hi, i m new to this forum and recently i ve started picking up components to build a new system. Neways, it's been a while since my last system build (due to mobility reasons i had to compromise for a lappie)
and i was wondering if any of you people would give me some advice and let me know of any potential compatibility issues regarding my new system.

at the moment this is what i got:

chassis: Asus Vento 3600 (red)
PSU: ThermalTake PurePower 560W
mobo: Abit AA8XE Fatal1ty
CPU: Intel P4 520 (2.8Ghz)
CPU cooler: Asus Star Ice
HDD: WD Raptor 37.6GB (10,000rpm, 8mb cache - SATA)
Memory: (still thinking about it)
GFX: Gainward 1960 GLH, geforce 6600GT (128MB PCi-X)

My two main concerns are :
1. Will i have any problems fitting the Star Ice cooler in the vento? (i ve recently saw this chassis in a showroom and it blew me away, didn't take measurements tho and to my suprise the star ice is a monster of a heatsink)
2. Dunno what memory to get. I ve been a little confused on what is optimal for the Fatal1ty. On abit compatibility tester thingy (offical website) it says that it can support up to DDR2 700Mhz (ELPDIA) however on the box specs says that it will support up to PC5400. I have my eye on a "Corsair 1GB DDR2 XMS2-5400 Pro TwinX (2x512MB)" but i m wondering whether i should risk it and get a memory config with higher bw. Also, what would you say it's optimal CAS latency for intel ? (I ve been an AMD user in the past and i know that lower latencies gave better results than higher bandwidth, not sure if intel works the same)

Lastly, I am looking to oc from 4x200mhz bus to 266mhz for starters... Will this be stable under current config ? will it go anymore without watercooling and further tweaking?

I know it's been long so many thanks for sparing the time to read this!
if u have any comments it will be greatly appreciated.

Hi cs and Welcome to the forums!

Here's a bump for you.

BTW, there's a link to the vento 3600 over in the cases and cooling forum. I beleive the link provided has the specs. Maybe you'll be able to tell if the cooler will fit.

Fern

EDIT HERE'S the vento link

not sure about either of your questions ... but i would recomend changing that power supply. Thermaltake doesn't make high quality PS's, and especially if you OC it will be best to get one from a well known company, like antec, fortron, or OCZ.

hmm... i had my doubts regarding the PSU... i found it in a shop going for 40 pounds so i picked it up without a second thought (560W atx 2.0) but i hadn't really seen anyone using thermaltake PSUs in the past so i dunno...
Alternatively i have an Antec TrueBlue 480W PSU from an old config (not so old)
however i m not sure if it's atx v2.0 compatible.
Good thing is that the gainward doesn't need a second direct power supply from the PSU and i guess you can find 20 to 24 pin converters for the mobo (and similarly for the sata drives)
In any case, my chassis arrives today (woohoo!) so i ll take my time testing everything and running some benches to find optimal setup.

What would u guys say is a good value for money ATXv2.0 PSU ?
i m looking to spend no more than 50-60 british pounds (noise output is not a big concern)

thank again for the replies

Looks like a nice setup you have going. Didn't come in to help - just to welcome and say good luck with the build. Keep us posted... I'd really like to see pics of your gear once you get it in that case though - they're sweet. Take care
