Hello
I was recommended by a friend to this forum for computer help.

I am in search of a new computer. I'm looking to spend $1000 - $1400 (maybe a little more). I want this computer to last me for a couple of years like the one I am on. I am looking for new technologies, but they don't have to be the latest ones.

I am thinking of assembling it to save some money....so i would like help with prebuilt computers and just parts too.

I am looking to do:
  • · Work on Publisher (Programs like that)
    · Games (New/Old)
    · High/Medium Video Setting on Games^^
    · Internet
    · DONT WANT IT O FREEZE A LOT!

I recently upgraded my computer. For $650, this is what I got.

C2D 4300 Processor
MSI Platinum SLI motherboard
2 GB of Super Talent DDR 667 Ram
520W Power Supply
EVGA 7600 GS Video Card
2x500GB Seagate SATA-II Hard Drive
18x Sony SATA DVD Burner

Obviously if you have more money, you could upgrade the video card, possibly even dual 8800GTX's. I believe their currently around $300-$350 a piece. Should give you a pretty sweet new machine.

This is a build I suggested to a friend a few weeks ago, so I?m not sure how relevant the rebates are, but take a look. (This is all from NEWEGG.COM)

EVGA nForce 680i LT Mobo
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600(dual core) @ 2.4Ghz (9x266)
CORSAIR XMS2 DOMINATOR 2GB (2x1GB PC2-6400) 4-4-4-12 @ DDR2-800 RAM
EVGA 8800GTS 640MB GDDR GPU (#640-P2-825)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA 3Gb/s
OCZ GameXStream 600W Power Supply
--> Only things missing are the case, as low as $15 (a better bet is $30-$80 for a good one) and some DVD/CD drives (~$30 each)
Projected price after case/media drives without rebates: $1345.86
Projected price after case/media with rebates: $1220.86

If you have extra money, I suggest spending it on an E6700 > E6600 CPU, or an aftermarket CPU cooler.

Thoughts: The GPU is an excellent buy for gaming, and already has an aftermarket cooler attached. EVGA is also a great brand because they offer UNCONDITIONAL LIFETIME support. I?ve RMA?d stuff to them that no other company would ever accept, such as damage due to overclocking.
The CPU (66 or 67) are great overclockers, often reaching 3.0 ? 3.33 with minimal effort. By this I mean just bumping the FSB to 333, without touching voltage or memory straps or anything at all. With tweaking they go to 3.7 - 4.0. *WARNING* Do NOT OC without aftermarket cooling!
