New P4 system. GF4 kills it. What drivers?

Hey guys, just finished assembling my first P4 system together

P4c 2.8 (for the moment, till burn in)
ASUS PC4800-E Deluxe
1 Gig Kingston HyperX 3500 (stock until burn in)
Windows XP Proff (full updated from MS)
WD 80gig 8meg cache HDD
GF4 Visiontek 4200@ 275/500

Yeah, the card is low, but I can't afford a new card until later. For now I wanna get max outa of it, but My scores in 3dmark2001 (patched) was a pitiful 8835, my UT2k3 framerates for flyby was only 171.3, and botmatch of 63.3. There is no way in gods green earth my system should be performing that poorly. I put int 30.82' dets that I was using for along time on my Athlon system and they worked great, but now on this system, well, the results speak for themselves. I tried 40.41's but UT2k3 just crashed using them. Visionstek websites only says 30.82's as well, so im just at a loss

Can you guys offer any suggestions for a driver that will help my system do alot better until I can afford a 5900? Please, I know my system is capable of alot more

Is that a GeForce 4 MX or TI, your 3dmark 2k1 score makes me think it is a MX, but ur UT2003 score makes me think it's a ti4400..

That scores sounds amazingly low... you may want to double check that all AA and AF is turned off, and that vsync is turned off, and that 4X AGP is enabled. Before when I had a Gainward Ti4200 at the same speed you're running your's at... I was scoring over 12,000 easily with 3DMark2001 at it's default settings.

On a sidenote... where can I find the UT2k3 benchmarks? Are they part of the game? Or can they be downloaded... I've often wondered what my rig would score in those and how it compares to benchmarks that anandtech has on the site.

My P4 2.8C w/1GB PC3200 and a ATI 9500 Pro was pulling in aroud the same numbers.

I think it sounds about right.

Checked all of that, still no improvement. ANY suggestion at all for drivers? My friends a futuremark suggest 41.09's, 44.67's,

I would be curious to know as well. If your system is benching slow, mine probably is too. It looks like ours are pretty much identical except the video (and I run a P4P800).

Have you benched 3D 2003 yet? I did and got 3400 or something like that (I'm at my office now so I can't say for sure).

No 3dmark2k3 yet. I don't have full version either, I don't feel like paying for benchmarks when im not to impressed with futuremarks whole "cheating" scenario with drivers and what not

I got a similar system and got 11K with stock GF4 4200 it was run with a clean system just installed. might see what else you got running installed my #'s drop the more crap I got on it and what is running.

My system is almost exactly like yours

P4 2.8C
1024MB Kingston PC3200 value ram in dual channel mode
Ti4200 64MB 8x AGP
Abit IS7 motherboard
XP Pro

At 1024x768x32bit 85HZ I get 12,800 in 3d2001. That is with no overclocking. Is your card overclocked? That might mess it up.

Forgot to mention, i'm using the latest drives on Nvidia's website. I'm not sure what version number but its over 40.

One more thing, my Celeron 1.3ghz with a ti4200 and SDRAM scores 6810 in 3d2001 and OC'ed to 1.5GHZ scores over 7500+ in 3d2001.

EDIT: with the 800FSB and dual-channel, along with the 2.8C, I guess it does make sense that your scores would be much higher than my XP2000+ setup. Guess you should do what the others have said and check VSync and other tweaks in the display properties.

Considering he has better ram, a faster chipset on motherboard and the cpu, os, and video card are the same and my rig scores over 4,000 higher I think theres something wrong with his setup.

Icewind,
Are you sure that AA/AF and vsync are off, every time I updated my nvidia drivers it would automatically turn vsync back on, so double check and make sure those settings are off and everything is set to performance. I don't think the problem is with the drivers, your score should be at about 11-12k and the best drivers will not boost your score 3k (maybe 500 if your lucky).

I would imagine you have everything turned off in the background.

My xp2100 and Ti4400 would run10500 without overclocking.

Well, I just reinstalled Windows and put in the 3.6 catalysts. I'm up to 12800 in 2001 (about a 35% improvement!). I'm a little happier with that 🙂

I have *no* idea what is different, but I ain't going to complain now!

OK - I think I am more at the norm now. I did a reinstall of everything and I am not at about 13800.

I installed the Intel chipset drivers first, before anything else and that appeared to fix my conflict. No feeze ups anymore after doing that.

I think I am pretty much done my fiddling around.

I'm running the rig in my sig, with 41.07. My card is running @ 300/600... or thereabouts. It's an MSI GeForce ti4400 128mb. With AA and AF totally off, and mipmap set to best performance, and Texture Sharpening off, I get 15.2k 3d01. I think this link works... http://service.futuremark.com/servlet/Index?pageid=/orb/projectdetails&projectType=6&projectId=6617155

Anyways, my low score w/ the same system is like 13k, and that's just because of driver changes. MSI lists this driver as the last supported for All GeForce series cards. Beyond this one, they're all built for FX cards.
