new OS and still rebooting

Ok, I need help!
For the last couple of weeks, my computer has been rebooting itself at various times (running 2k). First I took the case off and made sure all my fans were working well, they were. Since I was afraid it may be an overheating prob, I turned my machine off every day and nite, which I dont usually do. Tonite when I got home from work, it would not boot... blue screen of death, no hard drive. I went and bought a new hard drive and XP Pro to go with it. After doing a brand new install, and all the upgrades about 2 hrs into the whole thing, it reboots itself again. I took the case cover off, just in case heat was a prob.. its VERY cool.. I have been up and running 4 hours total now, and it has rebooted twice. Its clearly not a software prob, as I have nothing but a brand new operating system on here... so its hardware. My machine is an AMD Athlon XP 1800.. my power supply is less than 6 months old (400watt).. anyone have any ideas??
Thanks, I really appreciate... I'm so flustered!

right click on my computer icon and select properties. Select advanced tab.
Under startup and recovery hit the settings button.
Deselect the box that says automatically restart and ok your way out.
Now when it faults instead of restarting it will blue screen if your lucky it may give you some hints.
Copy the facts of the fault down and post them here and maybe someone can help you with it.

Aargh! cant remember for sure.. does Antex sound right? and I'm running 256k ram, if thats what you are asking.
Thanks again!

I would go with that - sounds very similar to the problems I had a while back

Ok, it has happened three more times since I turned the automatic restart off. The first time it said there was an error with my memory. One at a time, I took both sticks of RAM out, but the problem persisted. Second time, it said "IRQL not less or equal"... I have no clue what that means. Third time it said "win32k.sys error" and gives an address of BF80156F etc. Any ideas?? Thanks!

Those symptoms sound like a motherboard going bad. Look closely under the light to see if any of the capacitors on the board are 'puffed' looking, not completely flat surfaces. If so, your board is slowly dying, and the symptoms of such are random reboots, and eventually hardware freezing.

🙂

Ugh! I just looked, and they are indeed "puffed". I guess that answers that question! Thanks so much for your help, at least now I know what I need to do!
