New Onkyo Receiver - Popping out of the surrounds randomly?

I am noticing some odd popping out of my new Onkyo SR-605 receiver. It seems to happen when changing channels, or when a commercial shows up, or when a movie (King Kong is what I am watching now) goes from previews to the Universal logo, to the actual movie. No popping occurs while it's actually going, though.

BTW, this is through optical from Comcast. I have not tried another source yet.

I have the 705 and the same thing happens. It occurs when the incoming audio signal changes from say DD5.1 to stereo. It sounds like a mechanical switching sound in the receiver and sometimes a soft popping out of the speakers.

I believe it is normal and has been noticed by many people on the AVS forum.

There might be a way to upconvert all incoming audio to a specific format and avoid the switching but it hasn't bothered me enough to find out.

Now it's doing it between scenes, randomly from each surround speaker. 🙁

If your receiver has autopolling to switch between a analog and digital source on the same input...turn that off.

I dont see anything like that. It seems to be popping via any input (or none). It pops with no signal or with signal.

Onyos are known for doing that. I have the 705 and it does it as well. You can customize the Listening Modes to minimize it. I have all mine set to output All Channel Stereo unless I'm watching a DVD that outputs DD+, DTS, or True HD when it will use a multichannel setting.

I let it rest a few hours and then opened up the spot it was in and I have not heard a pop yet. I have to wonder if it's overheating. It's in an open shelf, but it only have an iche of space above it, 6" on each side, though. We shall see.

Same things happens with my Onkyo HTS-590S 5.1 setup. When switching from a TV show to a commercial or changing channels, it makes a loud mechanical clicking sound. It's really annoying to say the least.

I have a 590S that makes a really loud mechanical switch noise whenever the format changes. My comcast box is notorious for changing the encoding type between commercials and the shows, and even sometimes 2 commercials will be different. My 705 also does the same thing but is much quieter than the 590 is.

Is the noise coming from the receiver or the speakers? Mine comes out of one each, randomly going between the center and surrounds.

For me, it's a loud clicking from the receiver, and a static-sounding scratch from the speakers at the same time.

Here is a video of the noise.. Sorry about the huge size, I am a video editing noob.

Please note that the pops earlier are actually loudest, but the noise was freaking my camera's mic out. The sound changes volume with the volume of the receiver. It's getting much worse, I fear.

the switching noise is normal, when it goes from DD to Pro-logic or whatever. that popping noise that you're getting from your speakers, unfortunately, seems to be a a problem with this receiver. Best bet may be to contact Onkyo (they may still deny it, not sure--but many have gotten replacements)

that's a pretty comprehensive account of the issue at AVS. (some 4,000 posts...) I think there is another thread for the 605, but AVS is a good source concerning this issue.

I haven't had any problems with my 605 *knocks on wood.

It's a very long thread, but I know the issue consumes several pages...somewhere in there... GL 🙂
