Since a lot of people like the old smileys, wouldn't it make sense to allow people to choose which set of smileys they want to use (in the form of a customization setting)? This is assuming, of cource, you're going to implement the new group also once you re-implement version 2.0. You probably thought of this already, and if not, I think it would probably be the best way to settle all the commotion over the smileys.

I don't think everyone is pissed at him, why should they be? zuni did give us fair warning that anandtech forums would be the beta testers for 2.0.

Paulson, I believe you are the only person that is pissed at him. Everyone else just hates the smilies, or some quirks about the board, but it's still beta and it's no reason to be pissed at him...
And I think having 2 sets of smilies would be cool, based on user preferences. And what's this about cookies info and 'all sorts of other stuff'? Wouldn't this just be something in the customize section, and something in the boards to display the smiley code a little different so the customizations work?

If/When you program for somebody you will understand that not everything is as easy as it sounds on paper. Some things, like thread views, are just not possible on a board of this size. Zuni's first priority is getting the board to work here, not to work on trivial things like smileys. Once the board is up and running properly, it's a snap to replace the smileys (not that that'll happen, but that's beside the point). When the new board is running smoothly, I'm sure he'll be much more patient and willing to listen to our comments/suggestions. For now, I say we give him a break and let him do his job. I have a couple of suggestions to make to him, but I'm not about start listing them off every hour when he has much more pressing matters at hand.
If I were him, my frustration level would be off the charts right now, because not only do I have a product not functioning properly for no known reason, I also have people whining about how it's not good enough for them. Patience is the key here, and Zuni has definately earned ours, so please be nice and ease up for now.

It wouldn't/shouldn't involve any more cookies if done correctly, which I'm sure Zuni would have no problem doing. As for the "extra space" taken up by 2 sets of icons....now that you can get 20 GB hard drives for under $100, considering Anandtech's budget, and the fact that 8-10 icons take up probably less then 100KB, is that really an issue?

He IS listening to our opinions, most of the new features are user suggestions. Just because he can't make changes on a very busy site immediately doesn't mean he's not listening.
This is still the best geek board out there Pretender I wish I still had the icons around to show you, they are just smiley but the one with the tongue is just so awesome and the new ones well..... All in due time though, lets all thank zuni for that hard work he's doing now!

They "sucked" were too "childish", looked "stupid", UBB's were "much better', and on, and on, and on.
How important, really, are the damn emoticons? I'm just happy that we have a stable forum that can handle the traffic, instead of finding ourselves re-registering every couple months.

Well, I'd rather have the old smilies. If you can't do that, the Dutch Power Cows' smilies (here's an example) look better than ours now. But since I imagine they're copyrighted, it might help to take note of a few of their features. If the eyes on these new smilies were dots instead of dots in circles (except for ":Q", of course,) and the faces were projected onto spheres instead of flat circles, they would probably look substantially better.
A couple of other ideas: the "" should be a smiling ":disgust:" face, and the "" (confused) face could better be typed in by :? (like the DPC,) or :S, or something.

I like most of them better because they just look more "alive" then the new ones, and I think that if some Moderator would email the guy making the smiles, we could use them for free...
