New old Hard Drive

My old computer's power supply blew up so I put the old HD in as a slave in the 'new' computer. The problem is the old HD randomly starts up and shuts downs (whirring noises) and it slows down the whole works for a bit. Is there a way to control or limit this since the old HD is now only a backup?
